Exeter UCW groups begin fall season EXETER - A pot luck meal preceded the September meeting of the af- ternoon unit of the United Church Women. Ruby Beaver, chairlady, introduced Ernie Miatello of Huron Apothecary who spoke on prescriptions and how to counsel people for possible reac- tion with other medication. He also mentioned possible side effects of as- pirin; Laura Sillery presented the speaker with a small token. t President Alma Langford greeted everyone with humorous short stories and a poem. Minutes were read, treasurer's report given and collection taken. Roll call was answered by 32 members with memories of a former teacher or school. The regional meeting will be held on September 14 at Exeter United Church. Hazel Snell was mentioned in remembrance. Doris Denham thanked everyone who helped at the Friendship Tea and Vacation Bible School. The Observer will be renewed by everyone who wishes it at $10 per year. The general meeting will be held on September 26 at 8 p.m. Audrey McRoberts read humorous stories on womens work and worship from the library. There are 14 quilts to be quilted. Jean Murray was chair - lady for devotions. Doris Denham entertained with a piano solo. Theme of the,meetittg a God's message, "Re„ye kind to one another: Virla Allen read from Proverbs, Marion Porter from Ephesians and Marian Dougall from James. The Purpose was repeated. Alma thanked everyone for their contribu- tions. Evening Unit The evening unit of Exeter United Church began its fall season with a potluck supper on September 12. Unit leader, Norma Cockwill welcomed all present. Following the roll call and the minutes, Gladys Talbot reported on the profits realized from five funeral luncheons, a ministerial luncheon, Safe Homes for Youth Banquet and the Coates-Patry wedding. Barb Tiedeman updated everyone on the Christmas Bazaar, November 12 and Marjorie Coleman announced Outreach Sunday is September 25 with Rev. Susan Eagle as speaker. The South Huron Regional will be held at Exeter United Church September 14 beginning with dessert and coffee at 6:30 p.m. Grace Ballantyne took the theme of Mission and Service during the de- votions. Agnes Aunger and Laurie Siiapton gave two autumn readings and everyone sang "In Christ There is No East or West.” A video depicting Mission and Service work through the United Church in underdeveloped and underprivileged countries of the world was shown. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction. St. Patrick's ACW meets The group had a noon luncheon before their meeting. By H. Davis SAINTSBURY - September 13, St. Patrick's ACW women were guests for a noon luncheon at the home of Hazel Davis with cight members present. Following lunch the meeting opened with the Mem- bers Prayer and General Thanksgiv- ing in unison. Scripture readings Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, and Psalm 125 were read by Margaret Carroll. The meditation followed with the theme "Choosing to follow". Prayers for Sunday Schools and Sick members were said by Heath- er MacGillivray and Bctty Johnson, remembering Marguerite Greenlee, Starr Davis, Eileen and Harry Car- roll. In the business that followed, thank you notes were read, a third bale is planned to go to Prayer Part- ner, Simon Beaver, this week. Items collected for Daily Bread are to be delivered. Plans for Harvest Thanksgiving lunch were discussed. Bob Hey- wood will be at St. Patrick's Octo- ber 23 at 11:00 a.m. for his mes- sage and songs. A time of fellowship is to follow in the Parish Hall. The meeting closed in prayer. Church service Sunday, September 18, St. Pat- rick's Morning Prayer Service was held at 8:30 a.m. Rev. Stephen Em - cry spoke to the children on "Who is the most important person?" and in God's eyes, in God's kingdom, the small child, the weak and the poor are the most important. Sunday, September 25, Pentecost 18, St. Patrick's Harvest Thanks- giving Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Scripture readings arc to be Job 42:1-6, Responsive Reading Psalm 27:10-10, James 4:13-17; 5:7-10, The Holy Gospel Mark 9:38-50. A time of fellowship will follow in the Parish Hall. Personals Ron and Margaret Carroll, Court- ney, Katie -Scarlett, Caleb and Cor- bin MacGillivray and the Michael Davis family were among the 30 relatives and friends at a Welcome Home and Get Well party for Starr Davis at the home of Grandma Dorothy and Uncle Lenny Dietrich at Dashwood on Saturday evening. Hugh and Hazel Davis attended the Lucan-Ilderton Jets hockey re- union and dinner held at the Lucan Arena on Sunday. They renewed old friendships and reminisced about the good times. Steve Storey organized the get-together. Congratulations to Harley Davis placing second in the 60 cc race at the Paisley, R.A.T. track on Sun- day. I'm happy to report Starr Davis is well enough to start kindergarten at Usborne Central School for a few hours each day.
