Environment Canada celebrates local partnership WINGI-IAM - The grand opening of the Wingham River Flats Eco- logical Park was announced Thurs- day by Paul Steckle, Member of Parliament for Huron -Bruce, on be- half of the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and Minister of the Envi- ronment Sheila Copps. The project is the culmination of a three-year partnership between Environment Canada and the Wingham Horticul- tural Society, under the Environ- mental Citizenship Initiative, to re- habilitate and enhance the watercourses, floodplain and val- leylands in Wingham's Mill Re- serve. Through this partnership, hun- dreds of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers have been planted in the park, resulting in improved ter- restrial and aquatic habitats. Aquat- ic habitat has been further im- proved through the placement of "vortex weirs" placed in the river channel to reduce hank erosion and create fish habitat. A walking trail that winds along the river has also been completed. The project com- plements Great lakes 2000, a fed- eral program which aims to restore, protect and enhance the integrity of the Great Lakes ecosystem. 1 • 177 Helen St. Dashwood, Sun., Sept. 25 10:00 - 5:00 We welcome you back to decorating and glft giving Ideas of dried and silk floral swags, bouquets, etc. by PAT GREEN ^ hand painted shirts, shoes and hats by LORI HICKS wooden shelves, doll rocking chairs, shadow boxes, benches, etc. by KEITH HAYNES folk art, stuffed bunnies, dolls and wooden jewelry by SISTERS TWO. "Immunizing should begin just after Thanksgiving," said Marlene Price, the assistant director of nursing with the health unit. But first, the health unit is get- ting ready to go into the schools to provide information sessions about the virus and benefits of the three -stage vaccination. While the vaccinations are on a voluntary basis, Price said the health unit is encouraging parents to safeguard against the virus. A provincial ministry of health release stated that more than 300 cases of Hepatitis 13 are reported in Ontario every year. Although no cases have been reported in Huron County over the last year, that doesn't mean people don't have the virus. Information provided by the ministry of health states that peo- ple can be infected and pass it on to others without knowing. Hepatitis B can be spread by contact with the blood or bodily fluid of a person with the virus. It can cause permanent liver dam- age and in some cases, death. It is also the leading cause of liver cancer in the world. While there is no cure for the virus, it can be prevented with the vaccine. Provincial health minister Ruth Grier announced funding for the school based program in recent weeks and said immunizing Grade 7 students ensures they will be protected well before they might be exposed to the virus. The vaccination will be given by public health nurses through a series of three injections over a six month period. Got a News Tip?
