Last Wednesday afternoon, just
the second day of school, the boys'
volleyball, girls' basketball and
girls' field hockey teams were all
out practicing. -
The Panthers have got a couple
of titles to uphold - the senior boys'
volleyball team is looking to repeat
as Huron -Perth Conference cham-
pions while the field hockey team
will be in quest for their third
straight provincial title.
On Wednesday there was an on -
running joke between the field
hockey team and girls basketball
teams seeing which •one could re-
cruit certain players.
The field hockey team has lost
five starters in Lynn Workman,
Carrie Simpson, Carla Taylor, Kris-
tin Strang and Lisa Forrest, all very
important members of the last two
championship teams.
Coaches Jim Workman and Lin-
da Farquhar had them running and
doing stick handling drills to get
ready for their season which begins
Thursday at Stratford Central.
Talking with his 1995 team,
Workman said, "I usually tell them
we have a reputation of being a
strong team and I'd like to keep it
that way."
Look for Danielle Miners, Cara
Gardner, Rochelle Geoffrey, Bre-
nyn Bayhnam, Jana Webster and
Toni DeJong to be the leaders of
this year's team.
Baynham was a big goal scorer
last ycar and just completed her
secondiyear on the provincial team
as well as travelling to the national
team camp. Delong was also on a
provincial team this summer.
"As a senior she (Baynham)
should be a strong leader, she was a
captain last year," said Workman.
He noticed there were not that
many Grade Nine students out this
year although he did announce
when the early workouts were.
"The numbers so far aren't that
high. I don't know if they're in-
timidated because we are so suc-
cessful," he questioned.
This Friday the girls will host
their own 16 -team Red and Black
tournament. It wasn't held last year
because they hosted OF.SAA.
Busy gyms: South Huron will he
a busy spot this weekend as, while
the girls are hosting the field hock-
ey tournament outside, inside be-
ginning Friday and running until
Saturday night, the senior girls' bas-
ketball team will play host to an
eight -team tournament.
The Panthers arc scheduled to
host Dorchester at 8 p.m. on Friday
while championship game is at
7:30 on Saturday.
South Huron teams travel to Cen-
tral Huron in Clinton on September
21 for their first Huron Conference
game of the season.
Scott Halpenny who coached the
senior boys' volleyball team a year
ago is now doing the junior team
and had them busy on Wednesday.
"This is good, i like this because
I get to work on their skills, I'll
work with the seniors a little," said
Halpenny who said Joe Jankowski
will coach the seniors.
The Panthers will be in Dor-
chester for a tournament this week-
end and host other Huron Confer-
ence teams on September 29.
Cross-country runners will soon
be preparing for their season which
has the Huron -Perth meet in Wing -
ham, hosted by F.E. Madill on Oc-
tober 18.
South Huron District High School's field hockey team hit the field for their first workout last
Wednesday. The defending provincial champions host their own tournament on Friday.

Exeter Fury fall 5-3
EXETER - On Sunday, the Exeter Fury dropped a tough 5-3 de-
cision to visiting Tillsonburg in Western Ontario Soccer League ac-
tion at the Canner's Field.
The hosts opened the scoring on a blast from Henri DeBruyn and
shortly after were awarded a corner kicks which they cashed in on
and Jason McFalls made it 2-0.
Tillsonburg battled back and got one before the half to cut Exeter's
lead in half. The visitors tied it up quickly in the second hall but Dan
Martens scored to give Exeter the lead once again.
The Fury had a few defensive lapses later in the game and
watched as Tillsonburg-scored three unanswered goals.
Exeter's Dan Martens, left; tried to get to the ball on Sun-
day against Tillsonburg.
