Fury beat Centennials
in battle to be the best
Henri DeBruyn scored two
goals in the exhibition
men's soccer game

EXETER - The new kid on the block gave the Ex-
eter Centennials quite a run for their money last
Tuesday night.
At the Canner's Field in Exeter, the Fury beat the
Centennials 4-1 in a senior men's exhibition soccer
game. Although there was a little pushing here -and -
there, and caution was given by referee John Ra-
senberg, for the most pan it was a calm game.
This is just the second year for the Fury who
joined the Western Ontario Soccer League's second
division (east). Tuesday's game was set up to see
just which team is the best in Exeter.
"It's for bragging rights. We both want to win,
we've never played them in the two years we've
been in existence," said Fury Shawn McFalls.
"We were going to play them last year but they
weren't that keen," said Centennials' coach Jeff
Playfoot.
The game was a chance for some of the Fury to
play against their old teammates.
"We've never played them before. About half our
guys used to play for them," said McFalls.
For various reasons, two years ago the Fury were
formed and although Martin DeBuryn was the
coach in the team's inaugural season they have had
to pretty well go it alone this year.
Playfoot who suited up, said before the start of the
game, "it's just to play and see who wins. Hopefully
it won't get too out of hand."
Scoring wise, it did get a little out of hand as the
Fury took a big 3-0 lead in the first half.
Tuesday's game saw the scoring open very quick-
ly as just five minutes into the contest, Rasenberg
awarded a penalty kick to the Fury. Dan Martens
made no mistake and gave his team a 1-0 lead.
Big first half lead: The Fury completely dominat-
ed the opening half as they scored two more goals
before the whistle.
Henri DcBruyn got behind everyone and shot into
the corner past Centennials' goalie Craig Winbow.
DeBruyn also set up the third goal as he sent the
ball through to Pete McAllister who hit the post but
Jason McFalls was there to jump on the rebound.
The Fury had a couple of other good chances as
Brent Rideout slipped past Centennials' defender
Dick Lord, let go with a hard shot but Winbow
made a nice diving save.
Mark Brintneil was going in alone with DeBruyn
but he overran the ball and didn't get the shot away.
In the second half, the Centennials tightened up
on their defence quite a bit and pulled to within a
couple of goals as Erin Weston walked in past sev-
eral Fury defenders and let go with a quick shot into
the lower corner past Tim McAllister.
With darkness falling onto the field, DeBruyn fol-
lowed a long pass up the middle towards the Fury
goal, out ran two opponents and scored on a very
tough angle.
The Fury have two games remaining on their reg-
ular schedule, on Sunday they will host Tillsonburg
and on September 18, take on London Croatia.
"Our playoff chances are kind of slim. We made it
to the Cup semi-finals," said McFalls of this team
which has a record of 5-6-3.
The much -improved Centennials arc 4-8-3 in the
second division (central) and their remaining games
arc against Alianza on Sunday, host Marconi on
September 18 and on September 24, are at St. Co-
lumban.

and Centennials' George
McEwan battle to get to the
ball during last Tuesday's ex-
hibition soccer game. Below,
