Drag racing
Hern and Lovie cntinue
to race after 20 years
They started out on the oval track
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
GRAND BEND - Once it gets
into your blood, drag racing seems
to stay there.
That holds true for Granton's Ivan
Hern and Exeter's Paul Lovie. The
two have been building race cars
and heading to the track for 20
years.
This past weekend they raced a
1980 Camaro in the Pro Class. On
the car's hood it says, "Wild Bunch
Racing". To race you have to be a
little wild and crazy, daring and
brave.
Strapped into a car which you
usually made yourself and flying
down a quarter -mile track at speeds
weil over a 100 miles per hour is
not for the week at heart.
"We live and breath it. We go
down to the national meets in Ohio.
It's interesting finding new things,"
said Lovie who admits the jitters
are still there when he gets behind
the wheel.
He is no stranger to the blacktop
at the Grand Bend Speedway and
was with his father who raced a
1958 Meteor back when the track
first opened in 1964.
"I used to clean up the track at
the end of the day," recalls Lovie.
At Hem's farm near Granton, the
yard has two cars in it - the 1980
Camaro and a 1970 Camaro called
'Milk Shake'.
Currently 'Milk Shake' isn't run-
ning yet as all Hem's time, energy
and money has gone into the 1980
car. So far he's poured nearly
S15,000 into it and to get it in win-
ning form it could take another
S3,000.
"It's (Milk Shake) a bigger engine
and about two seconds faster. It
will run in the high nine's I hope,"
said Hern of hoping that car will go
the distance under 10 seconds.
When the cars reved up at the
starting line in Grand Bend on Sat-
urday, they were focused on two
things. The Christmas tree, known
as the staging lights, and the finish
line.

to "red -line" at the finish line which
means you want to reach your max-
imum speed there.
"You have to get your gears right
compared to your tire size," said
Hern of the racing strategy.
The two have been heading to
tracks for nearly 20 years now but
it wasn't always the straightaway of
tracks like those in Grand Bend and
Sparta.
In 1975 they began racing stock
cars at Delaware but now their taste
is more for speed than endurance
and distance.
While the 1980 Camaro is strut-
ting its stuff at the local tracks and
in the chase for points at Sparta,
and 'Milk Shake' sits awaiting some
fine tuning, Lovie is building a
1978 Fairmont for the SuperPro
class.
"I'm hoping to be out by October
running but a Ford, it's harder to get
engine parts," said Lovie.

Getting cars is not that tough,
they are around. Finding parts,
money and time to get them ready
is tough. Sometimes, you like to
take a little memory a long with
you.
"My wife and I went in our hon-
eymoon in that car," said Hern of
the 1970 Camaro.
Saturday's racing at Grand Bend
fell victim to the bad weather once
again as it had been postponed
from the week before. However,
race fans were able to get a look at
the Motion Lincoln Funny Car
driven by Paul Noakes.
Next action on the track is Sat-
urday, Sept. 17 while the next day
organizers are planning oval racing
with micro sprints.
