For those who don't understand what that means and would like to figure it out, head to the Huron Country Playhouse's , Playhouse II for Hank Williams: The show he never gave. Lonesome Luke is the name Williams, played by David Kirby, calls himself, especially when he's feeling blue and usually when he has a nose full of alcohol. Locals will remember the Lakeview Casino as the place at the end of Main Street in Grand Bend where legendary bands such as Guy Lombardo came to play. For this show, the one Williams never gave, the HCP has chosen a New Year's,Eve theme and the place for the imaginary show, the Lakeview Casino. The show, which runs until August 20 is a little -different than Pat- sy Cline the smash musical story the HCP has produced this year. Hank Williams died in a car crash on January 1, 1953 and during the end of 1952 he was trying to pull himself away from a battle with al- cohol and drug addiction. While the Patsy Cline show has two main characters and goes through her life a step at a time, the Williams show is about what could have been. This show has some good moments, especialy the ejttrancc of the star but for the most part, especially the second act its drawn out and even a little boring. Don't blame Kirby because in this case he simply is not directed properly. Perhaps David Nairn should stick to acting which he docs very well. The Playhouse always makes sure to bring in top notch musicians to back up their stars and they didn't have to go very far to find some of -them. Locals will know fiddler Gerry Smith who was a big favourite at last Tuesday night's opening. There is Peter Hysen on the bass, band leader Larry Smith who is also the hand leader and Evan Ehgoetz on the pedal steele guitar. In one song, 'Your Cheating Heart', one of Williams' hits didn't seem to have Kirby and the band in sync. Also, during one of his stories, Williams describes a particularly tough night in a bar when he had to use a crowbar to defend himself from a drunken heckler. During the story, he takes his jacket off (the only time in the show) and displays a gun strapped to his hip. There is no mention of even why the gun is there. This left the audience guessing and they should have had some explanation. David Kirby as Hank Williams, centre, with Peter Hysen (bass), Evan Ehgoetz (pedal steele guitar), Larry Smith (lead guitar/band leader), and Gerry Smith (fiddle) in Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave at Huron Country Play- house. layhouse.
