Final Cheque, an eight-year-old gelding, and his owner Andrew Geiger of Zurich are a team, a team which lately hasn't been able to get in very much practice. Trying to save up a few dollars so he can go to university this fall, Geiger has been slug- ging away 13 hours a day at his summer job. That hasn't left much time to train his former race horse now champion quarter horse Che- quer for the 24th, Annual American Junior Quarter Horse Association World Champion- ships in Fort Worth Texas. This past weekend, Geiger and Chequer were very busy as they were at shows in Zu- rich, Thamesford and Thorndale. Beginning this Saturday they'll make their second appear- ance in Texas. A year ago, temperatures in Texas were well over 1(X) degrees F and Geiger was sick with the flu. He still managed to finish seventh in polebending and 13th in barrels. "I have something to prove to myself," he said while sitting in the tack room of his fami- ly's farm, Burnside Stables. "last year before I went 1 was constantly running 20's, I haven't broken 21 yet." He was refe I , to 20 seconds in pole - bending which is a rsc with six flags, 21 feet apart. Riders go strat down along side, the poles, weave back th .ugh them and then straight back. Polebending 'is by/far Chequer's best event because it gives the big former race horse a chance to bust loose and show it's tremendous speed. While both Andrew and his younger brother Steve arc very successful in barrel racing, it's pole bending which Andrew admits he has done better in. To qualify for the World Championships Andrew had to accumulate a certain amount of points through the many shows he has gone to in the past year. "I think they go by points, I was thinking I woulda't make it" One of the big shows to stack up points is in Ohio where Geiger said he had only one run in polebending and one in barrels. "I didn't accumulate any points there. I guess accumulated some late last year." The World Championships will have 700 youths 19 -and -under from across North Amer- ica and several other countries. The points had to be attained between May 1, 1993 and April 3S),,1994, . Chequer has not had a lot of work lately and has also been sick. He developed an abscess on his ncck and chest because of a reaction to a shot. Andrew Geiger with his horse Final Cheque. "I gave him two weeks off then 1 took him to the Zurich Fair," said Geiger. Even if Chequer is not in top form, and Gei- ger will surely know it before he packs up the trailer, they will still go because they enjoy the thrill of competition. Exeter played a solid game corning away with a 4- 3 victory and advancing to the semi-finals. Henri DeBruyn got things start- ed early for the Fury as he scored on a low drive but the hosts found themselves down 2-1 at halftime. Exeter controlled the play in the second half scoring three goals to secure the win. The Fury tied the game as a shot by Darryl Chap- pel was deflected in off a Strath- roy defender. Pete McAllister lat- er made an excellent cross to the far post where Marty DeBruyn headed the ball into the net. De- Bruyn scored soon/after as Justin O'Rourke gave him a hall to run on and he outraced the defender, scoring on a breakaway. Strath- roy added a goal in the final min- ute to finish the scoring. The Fury travel to Petrolia Wednesday for the next round of Cup play and then play in Delhi Sunday night. 1994-95 LUCAN MINOR HOCKEY IREGItSr117R//A'71710N AUG. 6 9-12 NOON AUG. 10 6-8 P.M.
