Hail hits Centralia area
The severe storm damaged crops, trees, and
windows.
By Mary Peterson
CENTRALIA - Summertime - and the days are hot. I hope you're stor-
ing memories of these hot, humid days to help remember when the chill
winter days arrive.
My husband and I have just returned from a three-week vacation, and
we've noticed quite a few changes. Members of Faith Tabernacle have
made great progress in erecting their new church in Centralia. North of
that site, another new house is also being built. And n.ws that Centralia
College will become an educational centre once again. Congratulations to
everyone who assisted in organizing this achievement.
We also noticed the growth of the crops during the past few weeks.
Wheat and cereal grains have ripened, turnip and bean plants have grown
quickly during the warm, sunny days, and the corn is now at eye level.
Unfortunately, the storm that roared through the area early Sunday
morning severely damaged many of these fields. Hail stones the size of the
end of your thumb ripped the leaves on beans and corn and flattened tur-
nip plants. They also crashed into the stalks of grain, causing many kernels
to fall to the ground. The intensity of the wind, rain and hail was frighten-
ing.
in Huron Park, the storm split a tree in half and blew out a front picture
window.
Things have also been changing at Centralia United Church. Outside
windows have been repainted, and the pews have been refinished to a
glossy shine. The new minister, Heather Smith, has moved into the manse
and begun her ministry at Centralia and Zion West United Churches.
On Sunday, July 24, Heather's message focused on the impact of shar-
ing. For the children, she told the story of the time that Jesus fed the crowd
from a few loaves of bread and little fish shared by a young boy.
Next Sunday, July 31, the combined service will be held at Zion United
Church at 10:00 a.m. Since services will not be held during August,
church members may wish to use this time to visit one of the other area
churches. Regular services at Centralia and Zion West will resume Sep-
tember 4.
A reminder to save your grocery tapes during August. Darlings, IGA
and Valu mart help the church through donations based on the value of
grocery tapes collected. Church members also save Campbell's Soup la-
bels and, for the Canadian Bible Society, used stamps. Stamps should have
a 1/4" margin of envelope left around them. Let Mary Peterson know if
you have saved pop tabs which can be used to purchase a wheelchair.
Thanks to June Essery for keeping you informed while I was away. I
hope you'll contact me if you have any news of interest to share.
