Antique farm equipment displayed at annual show

ILDERTON - There were many
different tractors at the Ilderton An-
tique Heritage Show on the week-
end but for Charlie Roadhouse of
St. Marys, his favorite has always
been the Rumley Oil Pull.
Between 1910 and 1930, the La -
pone, Indiana company made 16
different models and Roadhouse, a
proud collector, has one of each.
His biggest which looks a little
more like a locomotive than a trac-
tor, loomed high above all the other
tractors on the .weekend.
"The big one came from Alberta,
it's a 1911. I heard they, were there
and I went to see them," he said of
the Rumley's that were in a collec-
tion.
He keeps the tractors at his farm
and has even used the smaller ones
on occasion to do a little ploughing.
'-He said his antiques work a little
different in the field than the never
ones. •
"It's different, everybody changed
• to rubber wheels. I don't know
' why,".said Roadhouse while point-
ing to the steel wheels of the Rum-
ley's.
He not only colle9§, restores and
maintains the tractors but stems to
know quite a bit of history about
them.
"You could still buy them in
1935 but they stopped making them
in 1930. Allis-Chalmers took them
over."
Roadhouse has other farm equip-
ment in his vast collection in-
cluding a plough which he says was'
made in Exeter by a •company
called the Verity Farm Company.
After just a few short years around
1900,it moved to Brantford.
There were other names of trac-
tors at the show including Allis-
Chalmers, Hart Parr, McCormick-
Farmall, Minneapolis -Moline, Saw-
yer Massey and Cockshutt.
In the middle of the large display
of tractors were dozens of orange
Allis-Chalmerswhich all seemed to
be about the same size although the
years varied.
Included in this wckend was an
international show and competition
of the Allis-Chalmers and some of
those tractors were brought from
Kippen by Wayne McBride who
also . hat(. a handsomely restored
1929 Ruitney in his collection.
While Wayne -Was busy with the
tractors, his soil Brad was on the
other side of the show, displaying
how his antique gas engines work.
"We bring these so they (spec-
tators) know what they used to do,"
said Brad McBride.
He had a 1910 one -horsepower
Famous engine hooked up to a
Maxwell •corn shelter which was
manufactured in St. Marys.
McBride first got involved in the
small engines when a neighbour
brought one over to him.
Wayne and Brad are no strangers
to the. Ilderton show or local fairs
as they get to several during the
spring, summer and fall.
"This will be our third this year.
There will probably be three more,"
said Brad.
While talking to spectators and
explaining how the engines work,
Brad said, "it's slow compared to
today's standard but they are built
better than today's."
Farm equipment built now has to
be bigger to do more work but as
long as enthusiasts like Roadhouse
and the McBride's are showing
their collections, we will know
about farming's past.
McBride and Roadhouse keep farming's past preserved
