Belgian exchange student hosted by Grand Bend family Though English is a second language, fo- riegn student edits year book for South Huron District High School By Erin Lobb T -A staff GRAND BEND - A Belgian exchange student has made a positive impact on a Grand Bend family. Bert Janssens has almost completed his 11 -month stay with the _/Walker family in Grand Bend. Eighteen -year-old Janssens, who hails from Antwerp, Belgium, is here as part of the AFS Interculture ex- change program. "I chose to come to Canada because of the image it had back home. I considered the United States but/Europeans don't have a good opinion of it," said Janssens. Janssens said that amongst his other choices were Costa Rica, Mexico and Jamaica. Janssens says that the hardest thing to get used to was the isolation of Grand Bend, especially in the winter time. "Everything is so far away, in Antwerp we just have to take a tram to another city." However, Janssens explains that he will miss the quiet peacefulness of the lake. Since his arrival Janssens said he has picked up only one bad habit. "The food you serve here is a lot richer than food back home. I think I might have gained some weight." In fact Janssens gained much more than that. He now has a new family that says they are very sad to see him go. Roberta Walker ex- plains that she would almost adopt Janssens if his family would let her. "gert has become a real part of the family. He is wonderful with Nir. disabled son Brendan, who was actually the one that requested a broth- er," said Walker. The Walkers actually picked Janssens from a catalogue. They had been host parents before and decided to get involved again when they were notified of a shortage of host families. "Bert was our first choice." Janssens has been attending school at SHDHS where he was year- book editor over the year. Though English is his second language he is very fluent in it and also speaks German, Dutch, and French. Linguistics is what interests Jansens who says he is going to the Uni- versity of Antwerp next year to take languages. He will be special- izing in English and Dutch. "We got involved with this program because we believe that it helps to create global harmony. If you can learn to tolerate others' idiosyn- crasies then that the first step to getting along. It is important for young people to network with others' all over the world. It makes them realize there's a lot more out there."
