Photodynamic therapy is being tested to treat
clogged arteries. A light-sensitive compound is in-
fused Into the blood stream. It collects on the -
plaque that causes the narrowing. The compound is
then activated by using a low -intensity laser, from a
fibre-optic tube which is threaded into the narrowed
artery, resulting in removal of the plaque.
Sounds encouraging except that so far work has been done only on rab-
bits. Human testing is still to come. But it looks like it will be less tyau-
matic than other methods currently in use to treat the problem.
Malaria affects two billion people in the world, the majority occurring in
Africa where the disease kills up tomillion people per year. But re-
search on a vaccine -to irradicate malaria is being done and it's hoped
that it will be available world-wide in 5 years. Hopefully, malaria will go
the way of smallpox and disappear from the earth.
Type 1 or juvenile diabetes, is thou t to be caused by the immune sys-
tem destroying the insulin -product Ils in the pancreas. There's new
research going on which gives all 'ly doses of insulin to those at
high risk of developing diabetes`. The go to deseisitize the immune
system. Sort of like desensitizing for allergies. Still experimental but
very interesting.
