EXETER - A couple of years ago
there were seven teams, now there
are none.
In last week's issue of the Titles -
Advocate, it was reported that The
Huron -Perth • Ladies Fastball
Lcaguc is dying - there arc only
four teams.
Baseball's Western Junior Base-
ball Lcaguc used to have seven
teams but this year, the league docs
not exist. However, according to
Exeter Minor Baseball Association
president Brad Grcgus who has
served as the junior league's con-
venor, junior baseball is not dcad.
"It's not a downfall of interest, it's
a cycle. There were a lot of.gradu-
ating players," said Gregus to why
thc communities of Exeter, Lucan,
Goderich, Clinton, Dashwood, Salt -
ford and St. •Marys don't have
teams in the WJBL this summer.
While Goderich and Clinton have
combined to form a team, Exeter
and Lucan ran into the long-time
problem of not having anyone who
could coach the team.
"The interest is there with the
players but 1 had no coaches," said
Grcgus who has coached the jun-
dors in the past. "I was goit jg to Eu-
rope and I couldn't do it. The prob-

Express regroup, win a pair of games
MacDonald has four hits in 12-2 win against Byron
EXETER - After suffering their
biggest defeat of the season, a 13-0
blasting by Lakeside, the—Exeter
Express regrouped to win back-to-
back games.

Chiefs last Tuesday and Byron on
Thursday saw the Express increase
their Great Lakes Senior Baseball
League record to 7-5.
They took that into last night's
game against visiting Thorndalc
and head to the Lakeside tourna-
ment in Londofi Friday night where
thcy meet Courtrigltt at 6:30 p.m.
Against the Chiefs, the xpress
trailed 2-0 after just half winning
but came back to make it 3-0 after
two complete frames.
In the Exctcr half of the second.
Mike Agnew, Rick Boon and Dar-
cy Martin all had hits. Later Boon
would come up with a key hit in the
fourth and Martin would connect in
the sixth.
Dave Atthil started on the mound
and workcd a solid four and two-
thirds innings before giving way to
Marty Matter. The two combincd
to strike out five, walk just one and `
give up eight hits and four runs.
Two nights later in Byron, the
Express exploded for five runs in
the tliird and five in seventh to win
easily 12-2. While the Express had
nine hits, they took advantage of
five Byron errors including throe in
the third,
Exeter centrefielder Don Mac-
Donald had four hits in this game
including a triple. Mark Glavin,
who played junior ball a year ago
had two hits with other hits off the
hats of Fred Gregus, Ron Elliot and
Martin.
Tem at that category, it's a struggle
to put coaches pn the field."
"Goderich and Clinton amal-
gamated, they told me that. They're
playing in the Blucwater League."
Baseball interest at the late teen-
aged years is strong as proven by
the many midget teams. Exeter Riv-
erview Estates midgets won ten
straight games before losing a pair
last week and having their record
dip to 10-2.
Most of those playing in the mid-
get league arc second -year players
so they will be moving up into
what Gregus hopes to create next
summer, a juvenile -junior league.
"I'm not panicking, next year that
league will resurrect. It will be a
combined juvenile -junior Ica e."
Going strong: Gary H rtman
who coaches the Exeter widgets
with Bill Hodge have got that team
rolling along with a 10-2 record.
Hartman says most of his 16
players will graduate up to junior
baseball next year.
"About two-thirds will move up
next year," said Hartman.
Last week the midgets went to
Listowel with just eight players due
to other commitments. It's that age
16-18, when players have many
other things to do including, work-
ing at summer jobs.
"The month of May (when they
were all still in school) was tough
to keep thcm all playing," said
Hartman.
One of the communities that had
steam in the WJBL was Dashwood
which put a midget -aged team into
thc league. Those from Dashwood
who have come to play in Exeter
have been a big plus to the team.
"We have pretty good depth. The
six guys that carne from last year's
Dashwood team have helped us,"
said Hartman.
Thursday the Exeter midgets, do
spite a late rally which included
doubles by Chad Ratner and
Dwight Gingcrich, lost 10-5 to
Mitchell. Daryl Hartman worked
three innings on the mound for Ex-
eter, Jeff Glavin went three and
Dwayne McNab came on to, finish
up.
"Thcy (Mitchell) just got some
nice base hits. They stuck the bat
out."
Monday night the midgets trav-
elled to Clinton and Thursday will
try to get a little revenge when they
host Mitchell.

THE MARK OF ZORRO
Have you noticed how guys are crashing into the net and knock-
ing down goalies? This never happened before the instigator rule be-
cause if you hit the goalie, some big defenscman would straighten
you out. Now if the defcnseman goes to help the goalie, he is
thrown out of the game, so it's open season on the goalies. Great eh?
Now, I know you remember when Wayne Gretzky was winning
all those Stanley Cups and setting records. The word around the,
league was that there was a rule not to hit The Great One. There
was no rule, it was Dave Semenko who protected-Gretzky. Touch
Gretzky and the word was you're dead meat. So with Pave riding
shotgun, Gretzky had a credit card to roam and not worry about be-
ing hit and he never got hurt. People who paid their money saw
Gretzky at his best and everybody was happy. Probed used to pro-
tect Stevie Yzerman. Now, have you noticed since the instigator
rule camc in, all the stars arc hurt. Mario Lemeaux is out with a bad
back, Patty LaFontaine with a broken jaw, Stevie "Wonder"
Yzerman out for a year with knee injury, and Gretzky is injured all
of the time.'There is nobody to protect them anymore and its open
season on the superstars (the players
who fans pay big money to see.)
So let's see what the instigator rule
has brought. It hasn't brought down the
fighting, hut it has made goalies open
season for the cheap shot artists. It has
been the cause of our super stars being
pounded and hurt, and it really has
brought up the stick work. This rule
was put in by thc governors (the own-
ers) of the NHL and the nearest some
of them have ever been to the ice... is in
their drinks.
