Pigeons race 500 miles By Al de Haan LUCAN - Recently the Lucan Homing Pigeon Club held their special, annual race: the Clarence Hardy Memorial. This race is flown from Gr. Mere, Quebec, and is open to members from other clubs whose lofts are located at least 425 miles from Gr. Mere. A guaranteed first prize of $500 attracted entries from London, Woodstock, Stratford, Tillsonburg, St. Thomas, and of course, Lucan. A total of 98 pi- geons were entered in this special race. The weather was close to ideal when these birds were released at Gr. Mere at I a.m. According to eye -witnesses, the pigeons quickly homed in on their range and were soon leaving Quebec and head- ing for home: Ontario. What scoring a hole -in -one is to a golfer is what getting a 500 -mile day -bird is to a pigeon racer. The Smith brothers from London, along with fellow - Londoners Martin vanden Plas and Whitey McDo- nald, had that pleasure, as did Gord Lautenschlager from New Hamburg, John Koekman from Stratford, and our own Norm Hardy from the Lucan club. The Smith loft win was remarkable in that last year they also won this big race. (Is is said that the Smith birds seldom suffer from respiratory problems). Norm Hardy's day -bird placed fifth in the open race and first in the Lucan club race. The next morning Norm clocked a pigeon that took second, and local flyer Al de Haan had one come home at 8 a.m. that captured third place. Jim Whitworth was fourth; Tom Hardy fifth and sixth and Mitch Sczcech seventh. A "shorter" race was held the same day from Cornwall, Ontario, a distance of 360 miles. These birds were released at 8 a.m., and the winning pi- geon, owned by Jim Whitworth from the Forest area, reached its home loft 10 hours and seven min- utes later. Al de Haan came in second; Jim Southern from Kerwood took positions three, four and seven, and Norm Hardy. in position five, nosed out neph- ew Tom who placed sixth. The weather resulted in satisfying race results. Nal Snoddy, Mike Under- hill and Marshall and Marion Dearing won gold medals at the Tri - county games and will represent our com- Inunity at the Provincial Senior games In August.
