Exeter Fury defeat Delbi Royals
Dramatic come -from -behind effort gives Fury 3-2 victory on Sunday
EXETER - The Exeter Fury won a dramatic
3-2 come from behind victory over the vis-
iting Delhi Royals on Sunday.
Exeter fell behind in the first half despite
carrying the play to the Royals when a Delhi
player came up with a loose ball and fired it
past a diving Craig Winbow.
Dave Boersma replied for the Fury when he
floated a long shot over the goalie's head for
his first goal of the season.
Delhi took a 2-1 lead late in the game and
looked as if they were destined to win but the
fury didn't give up. Pete McAllister spotted
Tom Westerveld streaking towards the net
and fed him a nice pass. Westerveld made no
mistake and blasted a shot past the helpless
Royals goal keeper to tie the game at two.
A minute later, Boersma carried the ball
deep into the Delhi zone before crossing the
ball low along the ground where McAllister
knocked it in from close range.
While protecting the one goal lead, Exeter
almost made it 4-0 as McAllister passed the
ball to Brett Rideout who was speeding along
the left wing. With a tremendous solo effort
Rideout worked his way in and levelled a shot
that was destined to find the back mesh but
was foiled by a quick Delhi goalie who made a
textbook save.
Fury player Jason McFalls said he was sur-
prised at the outcome because the Fury isn't a
high scoring team.
"When we got behind 2-1 it didn't look
good," said McFalls adding the two quick
goals they scored late in the game were per-
fectly executed plays generated by a whole
team effort.
Coach Jeff Playfoot credited the team's win
to their good listening habits.
"They just started doing what I've been tell-
ing them to do all year and the breaks started
to show up," he said.
Playfoot, who has already gained a colorful
reputation in the league after being evicted
from a game for his fiery comments directed
toward a referee, contained himself to a chair
positioned along the sidelines since the ref of-
ficiating the game was the same one who ban-
ished him a few weeks ago.

Imperials lose
to Fergus
FERGUS - After missing two
home games because ;of weather,
the Exeter Imperials Junior Fastball
team travelled to Fergus on Sunday
night and were trounced 8-0 by the
host club.
The 12 day layoff since their last
game in Aberfoyle was evident as
they were outplayed in all aspects
of the game.
Fergus ()pelted tate scMidg'in the'
.`fourth 'inning as they plated four
rubs on three hits and two bases on
balls off Exeter starter Steve Cook.
With the game no longer in doubt,
they added four more runs in the
sixth off Cook and reliever Kevin
Gooder.
Sean Pellow retired the only bat-
ter he faced. Cook worked five and
one-third innings, giving up six
runs on nine hits while walking two
and striking out eight.
Offensively, Exeter were held to
only four hits, a single by catcher
Gavin Snell in the first, a double by
Darren Kints in the second, a single
by Sean Pellow in the fourth and a
double by Greg Dalrymple in the
seventh.
In action this week, the Imperials
hosted Mitchell last night with re-
sults unknown at press time.
The Imperials announced last
week that Janet Buchanan, former-
ly coach of the Exeter Greys Ladies
Fastball club, has agreed to assist
as a coach for the balance of the
year. Her experience and vast
knowledge of the game will be in-
valuable as the Ontario Champion-
ships and league playoffs approach.

Irish need new selection policy
"Three members, those with
hockey knowledge, should be on
the selection committee."
Dear Editor:
I was quite surprised to read in your recent edition
that Scott Bogart was not rehired by the Lucan Irish
of the Ontario Junior Development Hockey League.
Not to slight George Pratt Jr., for he is a good coach
as well, but the way in which Scott and his coaching
staff was treated is unfortunate and I personally be-
lieve a new policy by the Irish should be drawn up.
As any hockey person knows, especially those fa-
miliar with junior hockey, it takes at least two years
to build a winning team, sometimes three. The Irish
have always had an excellent winningtrdition and
Scott, who replaced Ken Needham was keeping that
tradition going.
I suggest that the Irish look at giving their coaches
a three year contract but more hnportently they look
at wh ch members of the executive select the coach-
es. It is not necessary for the entire execudve board
to be involved in the decision. Three members,
those with hockey knowledge, should be on the se-
lection committee.
Scott Bogart and the entire Bogart family, as I
have said in the past, are a traditional coaching fam-
ily. They instruct and lead with discipline, hard
work and dedication. That combination is very hard
to find. I wish Scott all the best in his future hockey
quests. I wouldn't be surprised that while I am writ-
ing this another junior team has already made him
an offer. I want to congratulate him for speaking his
mind through the media, he got his point across and
I hope the Irish executive paid attention to what he
said.
In closing, I would like to wish George Pratt and
the Irish good luck in the upcoming season and send
a special congratulations to the Exeter Hawks for
winning the league championship, congress to Rev.
Bart and all the rest.
Sincerely,
Pred Groves,
Klactellitte
