"Why is it the Town of Exeter never stops to Celebrate Canada's Birthday?" Without a valid answer, the Legion decided to do something about it, and what originally started out as a one daS' event, has escalated to a two day birthday party that has brought the town of Exeter and its surrounding communities together to Celebrate Canada Day for the last five years. This weekend the Canada Day Committee promises an ambitious town -wide party with a variety of activities for children and adults including popular previous events like the chili cookoff and the equally explosive fireworks display, to new activities such as a soap box derby and the horseshoe tournament. DeVries said the events taking place over the weekend would not be possible without the combined efforts of Exeter service clubs such as the Lions Club, the Optimists and the Legion along with the Exeter Business Association, the Agricultural Society, the South Huron Recreation Centre, 114 \I dih . A special feature this year includes a hot air balloon ride on Monday. Bill Bengough owner of Pizza Delight and George Roche from RPM Marketing in Strathroy, have teamed up with local businesses: Stedmans, Wuerths, MacLeans, Becker Farm Equipment, Heywood Auction and Canadian Tire to cover the costs of bringing the balloon to Exeter. For $1 children can experience the thrill of a hot air balloon ride between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m at the Exeter Fairgrounds; cost for adults is $3. Bengough said they were able to keep costs low because of the business who helped sponsor the event and estimates 200 people will ride, straight up and down, on the tethered balloon prior to the fireworks display. "We wanted this to be an added attraction for the kids," said Bengough. 141 SCHEDULE Of EVENTS - Saturday, June 29.1996 - White Squirrel Day. 1*1 10:30 a.m. Buckles, Boots and Spurs (Town Hall Square). 11:30 a.m. Bike Decorating Contest (Prekindergarten to grade 8.
