Insurance deadline could be critical for many
with earthquake insurance.
, According to Ross Long of Exet-
er Insurance, who was busy re-
ceiving flood -related calls on
: Thursday, many situations involved
damage due to sewer or drain back-
; up, which most people were coy-

Fire Department
: The Exeter Fire Department has
: been involved with the clean-up in-
: cluding pumping water and hosing
mud away from local businesses
The department also helped pump
water out of the boiler room and of-
• tices in the basement of the South
: Huron District Hospital
"It's minimal compared to '69."
said Leroy Edwards, the hospital's
.director of housekeeping. "It wasn't
.that bad."
' Although water coming up
.through the drains rose to an es-
'timated two -foot level, the pump
kept up to the flow. When Edwards
.arrived at the building at 1:15 a.m.,
water was heading across Highway
'4 and down Anne Street.
rile fire department also aided in
the clean-up at Exeter Villa.
"I stood on Pryde Boulevard tor
an hour and watched the water run
down John Street," said Mary Jane
MacDougall
Water had entered the east wing
through floor drains As well, ex-
cessive water lett six inches of mud
in the parking lot. MacDougall said
she couldn't get into the building
"We were very fortunate," she
said, commending the fire de-
partment its help.
Although Chief John Morgan said
firefighters weren't as busy as the
PUC or town works department,
they did deal with minor situations
such as alarms that were set oft
Local clean up
The town quickly arranged for an
additional garbage collection on
Friday and will also make the land-
fill site available at no cost.
Debris, including hay washed off
of fanners' fields, has collected in
town and blocked off a dram on
Huron Street West during the
stone.
Rene Vanbruwaene, of Eastern
Ave., recently moved to town from
his farm and he said he felt like he
was sharecropping as he removed
piles of corn that had washed onto
his properly from the farm land just
east of town.
Many property owners in town
had to contend with raw sewage
that backed up through basement
drains Virtually every carpet clean-
ing company in the area was repre-
sented in town as calls for as-
sistance were pouring in.
Rene Vanbruwaene's back
yard was the final resting
place for a full truckload of
corn stalks which was carried
into Exeter from Usborne
Township.

Overloaded drains couldn't
handle the rush of water that
was dumped on Exeter in
such a short time. The above -
photo was taken behind the
Canadian Tire store at five
a.m. Thursday. At right, Din-
ney Furniture employee Glenn
Slade was looking for higher
ground as virtually the entire
store was flooded. Dinneys
have opened a temporary lo-
cation in the former Campbell'
Appliances building.
Main Street
a waterpark
Above, the Helen Jermyn Apartments on Sanders Street East suffered extensive flooding as
well as other area homes. This tractor on Huron St. East, below, was a typical scene Thursday
morning. It was in the same spot at press time Tuesday as additional rainfall has made this
year one of the most challenging for area farmers.
EXETER - Shortly after 1 a.m. a
small lake stretched from just past
the traffic lights at Huron Street to
the front steps of the Bayberry
Cafe. A car tried to drive through it
before police could block off the
road, but stalled leaving the oc-
cupants and their vehicle stranded
until a passersby helped push them
out.
Jack Mayer from Mayer Plumb-
ing and Heating pulled his work
van up to the water's edge and Ron
Cornish yelled out to him: "Can
you turn the tap off?"
A barrel full of flowers, one of
the many placed by the EBA a few
weeks ago to beatify the downtown
arca, floated across the flooded
street. It finally came to rest two
blocks down Anne Street on the
front yard of Todd and Karen
Jones.
Teenagers took advantage of the
instant water park in downtown Ex-
eter splashing through the flowing
stream that, at one point, was above
their knees.
A few courageous youths took
turns joyriding on a floating air
mattress.
'Che force of the water raging
around the front of Canadian Tire
was strong enough to sweep the
daredevils across Main Street and
carry them swiftly a block down
Anne to William Street.
The moving water was also
strong enough to pick up a large
storage shed at the back of Kevin
Buchanan's pmperty on Huron
Street East and shift it five feet.
"1t was flowing like a river
through here. Words couldn't de-
scribe what it was like," said Bu-
chanan, adding the water level rose
to the first step of his outside deck.
The basement. that was newly fur-
nished, was flocaled nearly four
feet. The family television was bob-
bing in the corner and laundry ap-
pliances were also destroyed. The
biggest loss, however. was the col-
lection of Family video tapes that
were floc ing aimlessly in the
flooded iootn.
'Insurance can't replace some
thing like that;' he said.
Many of his neighbors faced a
similar situation.
