Exeter Co-op Junior baseball team
wins three out of four last games
EXETER - The Exeter Co-op
Junior baseball team completed a
busy week playing four games over
the last seven days.
They lost to Strathroy 4-2 last
Wednesday but rebounded to beat
Arva 7-5 on Thursday and picked
up two wins in back to back games
against the London North Stars
beating them 12-3 on Saturday and
12-9 Sunday.
Exeter vs. Strathroy
Mark Glavin pitched six and two
thirds innings. Glavin hit one
Strathroy batter, allowed five hits
and issued no walks.
Exeter leading 2-1 going into the
bottom of the seventh, allowed
three consecutive hits, and hit an-
other Strathroy batter to lose their
lead. Scot Kemp pitched two in-
nings and Shawn Gillespie finished
in this game. Exeter pitchers did
not allow a single walk. A total of
six errors cost the Juniors this
game.
Joe Maskell and Dave Hopf both
belted doubles with singles hit by
Darryl Hartman, Blake Schade,
Scot Kemp, Mark Glavin and
Dwight Gingerich.
Exeter vs. Arva
Leftie Darryl Hartman pitched
five innings, striking out three Arva
batters allowing five hits while
walking two batters. Dwight Ginge-
rich finished the game striking out
four batters, allowing two hits
while issuing two walks.
Defensively, the Juniors only
committed one error. Blake Schade
led with a hot bat with two doubles
and a single. Dale Hopf doubled,
Dwight Gingerich three singles and
Scot Kemp, Chad Ramer and Joe
Maskell two singles each. Jason
Maskell one single.
Exeter vs. London
Scot Kemp pitched the complete
nine innings. Kemp struck out five
batters, showed excellent control,
walking only two batters, while al-
lowing six scattered hits in the en-
tire game. Exeter defense commit-
ted three errors. •
The Juniors, short of players at
this Saturday evening contest, were
forced to bring up Paul Gregus
from the Midget squad and use a
couple of veterans, coacl.ss Gary
Hartman and Jeff Keller. Gregus
belted out three singles, while Hart-
man and Keller each contributed
singles in their first and hopefully
last at bats for the season.
Scot Kemp doubled and singled,
Jo Maskell, Blake Schade, Darryl
Hartman and Dale Hopf all chalked
up two singles.
The Exeter Co -Op Juniors, play-
ing their fourth game in five days,
played an aggressive bunt and run
performance in this return match
against London.
Dwight Gingerich, Mark Glavin,
Darryl Hartman and Dennis
McCann all shared pitching duties.
Playing this many games in five
days, Exeter Juniors are confident
in their pitching abilities.
Exeter defense committed throe
errors and must improve this aspect
of their game, with most of the er-
rors being committed on routine
plays. Hard hit balls, double play
balls are being played accurately.
Pitching is doing well and Exeter
bats are the big reason for the Co -
Op Juniors' 5-3-1 record.
"Halfway through the league
schedule, we hope to maintain this
better than 500 average," said
coach Gary Hartman.
Against London, lead off batter
Dale Hopf did his job with three
singles, followed by Darryl Hart-
man with three singles. Blake
Schade continues with solid hitting
with two singles. Mark Glavin, Jo
Maskell each two singles, while
Chad Ramer, Dennis McCann both
laid down picture perfect bunts for
singles. Bill Hodge added a single.
Exeter Co -Op Juniors have a
much easier schedule this week,
playing a make-up game against
Thorndale on June 23 at 1 p.m. in
Thorndale.
Centennials extend winning streak to three
EXETER - Riding a two game
winning streak, the Exeter Cen-
tennials beat the German Ca-
nadians 2-1 at home on Sunday ex-
tending their winning streak to
three games.
Inspired by the return of set-up
man Ruban Chelladurai, the Cen-
tennials were pumped for the game
but quickly found themselves in de-
fensive mode when the German
Canadians pressed early. Good
rear guard control of the play by
goal keeper George McEwan and
sweepers Joe Martens and Joe
D'Ariano kept the visiting team
from scoring.
Their poor shooting allowed Ex-
eter to capitalize and score when
Ruud Veldhuizen and Dan martens
combined to send striker Mark
Brintnell in alone. A strong chal-
lenge by the German Canadian
keeper was met by a stronger shot
by Brintnell as he buried it to give
his team a 1-O lead.
Accurate lateral passing and
strong runs gave Exeter several
good chances to score again but
the half ended with Exeter leading
1-0.
The visiting team responded ear-
ly in the second half when a blast
eluded McEwan inside the near
post. The pressure of a tied game
energized the Centennials who
made it 2-1 after Veldhuizen took a
pass from Jeff Lingard and drove it
past the diving keeper.
John Flanagan and Shawn Rot-
teau did a good job warding off the
German Canadian wingers and
smart defensive play by Martens
and D'Ariano kept the visiting
team from scoring after they
pressed hard near the end of the
game.
Centennials vs. Portuguese
Last Wednesday the Centennials
came back from a two goal deficit
to defeated the London Portuguese
3-2.
Losing 2-0, Exeter finally got on
the scoreboard when Jason Wright

Jana Webster, in net for Exeter,
turned away three good goal scor-
ing opportunities by London in the
first half, rushing out to challenge
an opposing striker more than
once, She made three more spec-
tacular saves in the second half,
but couldn't help her team when
they came out flat offensively and
allowed London to score with only
five minutes left in the game.
There was little time to recover as
Exeter dropped the contest 1-0.
Last Wednesday Exeter played
St. Thomas in what was almost a
repeat performance. While dom-
inating most of the play, they al-
lowed their opponents to score and
take a 1-0 lead.
However, with only ten minutes
left to play, Monica Ryan blasted a
shot at the net that rebounded off
the cross bar and came directly out
, to Robyn Carnochan who put it
away to tie the game at one.
Exeter threatened to score near
the end of the game creating a few
good scoring chances but couldn't
notch the game winning goal.
Their next two games are played
at home with the first one sched-
uled for tonight (Wednesday) and
the second on Sunday. Game time
is 7 p.m. for both games. '
ble bringing the Centennials within
one. Motivated for the second half,
Jeff Lingard re -directed a pass
from Veldhuizen inside the 18 yard
box to tie the game at two. Striker
Josh Thompson banged home the
winning goal after Dan Martens
chased down a ball that was headed
out of bounds and kicked it across
the crease where Thompson was
positioned to score.
With a 4-2 win/loss record so far
this season the Centennials are cur-
rently second in Division Two Cen-
tral. They will meet the Exeter
Fury tomorrow (Thursday) in a
Second Division Cup tournament
game.
