John Watson fights off a Latino defender during an Exeter Fury soccer game on Sunday. Wat-
son scored on a long and accurate kick picking off the far top comer to tie the game in the
second half but the Fury still lost 2-1.
Fury lose first game of the season
EXETER - The Exeter Fury suf-
fered their first defeat of the season
Sunday, 2-1 to the Latinos from
London after allowing a winning
goal in the last five munutes of the
game.
The game started with the Lat-
inos having the early pressure on
the Fury defense. Fury goalie Craig
Winbow made a great diving stop
of a penalty shot in the first two
minutes to keep the Latinos off the
scoreboard. The visitors managed
to get the lead however, as a Latino
player was left unattended and he
made no mistake by picking the far
corner of the net.
The Fury started to play better in
the second half and tied the game
on a brilliant rush by defender John
Watson scored when he fought his
way past the 25 yard line and
drilled a long shot into the far
upper corner of the net.
Pete McAllister nearly had a
goal of his own as the Latino goalie
appeared to catch McAllister's shot
on the other side of the goal line
but play continued with the score
tied.
The Fury pressed for the win per-
haps inspired by the ejection of
coach, Jeff Playfoot who was
kicked out form the sidelines after
becoming a little too vocal about
the officiating. But they failed to
capitalize on a couple of chances
that would have put them up by one
goal. With the game in the dying
minutes the Latinos were given a
corner kick that eluded the grasp of
Winbow and found its way to the
back of the net.
The win keeps the Latinos perfect
record intact but drops the Fury
record to 2-1-2. The next game for
the Fury is Friday night in In-
gersoll.

Exeter wins Masters Tournament-
GODERICH - A local team from Exeter con-
sisting of past and present Centennial soccer
players won the 15th annual Masters Soccer Tour-
nament on Saturday.
The tournament, which Exeter repeatedly par-
ticipated in, but has never won, included teams
from as far away as Guelph, Windsor and Michigan.
Peter Hakvoort, Charlie Wise and Brad Lightfoot
scored the goals in the first game against Suageen
to win 3-1. In the second game, strikers George
McEwan, Julio Farfan and Hakvoort scored for a 3-
0 win over Windsor Ciocaro.
Wise scored Exeter's lone goal against Anchor
Bay Michigan securing a 1-0 victory.
Undefeated after three games, Exeter earned a
berth in the final game against the Windsor Scor-
pions. A controlled defensive game led by Brad
Lightfoot and Pat Donnelly of Exeter allowed Far -
fan and Hakvoort to score putting the champion-
ship trophy in Exeter's hands.
The toumament outcome was a surprise to the Ex-
eter players since they needed to adjust their line-
up prior to the final game. Three of their key
players were absent due to a Centennials regular
season game against Nairn that afternoon.

Centennials short on
RlaXerss, big on goals
r
- With only 11 players
dressed the Exeter Centennials
beat Nairn 4-1 on Saturday.
Goal scoring sensation Jeff Lin-
gard opened the scoring for Exeter
with two goals. One on a breaka-
way and another off his head from
a corner kick by Ruud Veidhuiz-
en.
Suffering from exhaustion the
Centennials never lagged keeping
the pressure as Jason Wright and
Dan Martens made several great
runs but just missed their mark.
Joe Martens kept the host team at
bay playing the sweeper position
while setting up his teammates
with passes.
SARNIA - The South Huron Dis-
trict High School senior boys soc-
cer team lost a one goal game to
Tillsonburg in the quarter finals on
Thursday during the AA/A tourna-
ment held in Sarnia.
After winning their pool with
three wins South Huron came up
flat in the first half giving up three
goals. The Panthers rebounded
quickly with Dave Farquhar scor-
ing two goals but, despite many
good chances, the tieing goal elud-
ed them as they dropped the quarter
final game 3-2.
In pool play, South huron defeat-
ed Medway 3-2 in the first game,
Huron Park (Woodstock), by the
same score in the second game and
shut out St Mary's (Owen Sound)
1-0.
Dave Farquhar scored two goals
in each of the first two games and
notched the game winner against
Owen Sound. He was backed up by
teammates Marty Debruyn and
Souban Inlakhana who scored one
each.
Despite the loss the seniors have
had an extremely successful season
earning their first Huron -Perth title
in 11 years and a berth in the
WOSSA playoffs.
The seniors went undefeated
through the regular season and ac-
cumulated an impressive 18 wins
and 4 loss record scoring a total of
52 goals and allowing only 18
against.
A team of leaders and gentlemen,
the Panthers played with integrity
never receiving one red card penal-
ty.

LUCAN - St. Jerome, Quebec, is
situated at a straight-line distance
of 410 miles (656 kms) from Exeter
and Lucan. Even on a good day that
distance presents a real challenge to
any racing pigeon.
The weather was close to ideal
when 25 pigeons entered by five
Lucan club members were released
at 6:00 a.m. The temperature
warmed up to 25°C, and the S.S.E.
breeze was an Irish wish come true.
Some poet believed that there's
not much in a name; that a rose by
any other name would smell as
sweet. Well, there is definitely
something in the Hardy name. A pi-
geon by any other name would not
necessarily fly as well. The record
shows that the Lucan Hardy pi-
geons have consistently shown
their mettle on the long, tough rac-
es.

They did it again last week.
Norm Hardy clocked his first pi-
geon from St. Jerome at 3:49 Satur-
day afternoon, nine hours and 49
minutes after it was released in "la
belle Province." Be that as it may,
Norm Hardy's first bird flew at an
average velocity of 1109 meters per
minute - good enough for first
place. Another of his birds took po-
sition four. Morgan Freele from
Grand Bend had a nice pigeon that
placed second, and local flyer Al de
Haan clocked his first pigeon exact-
ly two hours after the first Hardy
pigeon touched down. Still, it flew
well enough to capture position
three. Jim Whitworth from the For-
est area claimed the fifth position
on the race sheet.
On the same day a race was held
from Brockville, Ontario, a dis-
tance of 314 miles. Eight flyers had
entered 42 pigeons. The birds were
at
released at 8:45 a.m. and Morgan
Freele clocked the winning pigeon
seven hours and 20 minutes later. A
Freele pigeon that returned 20 min-
utes later took position three. Harry
Winters had a good bird that
sneaked into the number two spot.
Al de Haan had two pigeons arrive
at the same time; they placed fourth
and fifth. Norm Hardy placed sev-
enth, and Jim Whitworth bottom -
lined the score sheet with position
eight. Harry Winters also took posi-
tion six.
Weather conditions, for a change,
were favorable, and the race results
were proof. The pigeons flew well
and the returns were good. The su-
preme test, the 500 -mile race, is
now only two weeks away. The pi-
geons are keeping their wings
crossed, but they can rest assured.
Better weather is coming: we
checked the Farmers' Almanac.

Imperials
lose by one
EXETER - Two runs in the bot-
tom of the fourth inning provided
the difference as Drumbo defeated
the Exeter Imperials 2-1 last
Wednesday night in Drumbo in On-
tario Junior Men's Fastball action.
Exeter outhit the host squad five
to two as Gavin Snell, Greg Dal-
rymple and Chris Kennedy all sin-
gled while Steve Cook doubled and
scored the lone Exeter run in the
fifth inning. Darren Kints also sin-
gled in the fifth inning. Starting
pitcher, Kevin Gooder went the dis-
tance as he allowed only the two
hits while striking out 11 and walk-
ing two.
Exeter hosted Milverton at the
South Huron Rec Centre Sunday
night, with the result unknown at
press time, and they traveled to
Aberfoyle Monday night.
Left fielder, Greg Rutledge has
been lost to the club for up to a
month with pulled back muscles
and a cracked rib, suffered in the
Mitchell tournament.
