hold on to
beat London
LONDON - The Exeter lorry a14
most let a three goal Iead slip }'
away as they narrowly defeated ` ".
the London Morning Star 3-2 on
Saturday. •.
Bounmy Chansamone scored
Exeter's first goal after a cross
pass from Tom Westerveld creat-
ed a scramble in front of the Lon-
don net giving Chansamone a
clear shot.
Moments later Dave Maguire
walked in past'the 18 yard box
and drilled a bullet through the
London goalkeeper's legs.
Leading 2-0 going into the sec-
ond
half Exeter was awarded a
penalty shot. Coach Jeff Playfoot
gave Mark Lynn the Nod and
Lynn made no mistalrtr scoring
Exeter's third goal..
"After that goal we fell asleep,"
said Playfoot unable to explain
how his team could allow London
to get back in the game with two
goals of their own.
"We hada couple of defensive
lapses that lett our goalie without.
any chance to stop those two
shots," he added.
London almost tied the game
when they tried to caps aliie on a
tree kick with only five minutes
left to play.
However, the final score •was
deceiving. The Fury could ha
won by a higher margin and
threatened to do so eddy in
game when they created a n
ber of good scoring'opportuni
"We should have put It away
the first halt," said Playfoot
pointing out that Pete (McAllister
took a shot that ricocheted off
both posts. He hit the poet again 1
afterwards.
The Fury so far are under
with a pair of wins and ties.

Local pigeons wwin races
By AI de Haan
LUCAN - For most of the merry
month of May the weather was for
the birds - ducks, that is! Certainly
not for pigeons. As the poet says,
"They had a cold coming of it."
The first three races held by the Lu -
can Homing Pigeon Club were a bit
of a washout. The pigeons, because
of the cold, damp weather, were
difficult to get into racing form.
The result was tiresome races and
' slow returns.
However, in due time summer
sun, balmy breeze, and bursting
buds brought to our minds the
Thomas Hardy line, "This is the
weather the cuckoo likes, and so do
I." And so did the pigeons!
Nine members of the Lucan club
recently shipped 110 pigeons for a
race from Cobourg, Ontario, a dis-
tance of 172 miles. Pleasant weath-
er and a tailwind made for a rein-
tively easy race.
The birds were released at 8:45
a.m. and local flyer Harry Winters
clocked his first pigeon three hours
and 20 minutes later. With all the
variables added in, calculations
showed this pigeon to have flown
at an average velocity of 1359 me-
ters per minute: good enough for
fast place!
Norm Hardy took positions two
and four. Mitch Szczech, also from
Lucan, placed third and sixth and
Morgan Freele from Grand Bend
had a nice pigeon that took position
five. Jack Hardy claimed positions
seven, eight and 10, while Al de
Haan had to be satisfied with nether
nine spot.
But how sweet it is! On the same

earn first win of season
EXETER - Exeter Women's Soc-
cer team earned their first point of
the season on Sunday when they
hooted London South End.
London opened the scoring about
half -way through the first half but
Exeter turned the game around and
began to dominate coming up with
some quality goal scoring opportu-
nities but came up short on all oc-
casions.
In the second half, Exeter's de-
fense was still holding strong yet
the forwards couldn't get on the
board until a cross by Becci Farqu-
har strayed off in a gust of wind,
bounced off a defender's head and
landed in the net.
The Womens soccer team started
their season with an 0-2 record but
have since shywed steady improve-
ment.
They opened their season on May
15 with a game against Household
Plumbing in London. With a new
season and new teammates, Exeter
had troubles getting into the game.
In the first half, Household
Plumbing scored on a cross that
caught the strong wind and curved
into the net. Exeter then settled into
eir game and had some girt pp-,,
rtunities to score but could nod
capitalize.
Jana Webster played an excellent
game in goal keeping the score

go on to compete at the OFSAA fi-
nals in Kitchener Friday and Satur-
day.
The two earned a berth at the
OFSAA preliminaries after quali-
fying at WOSSA in St. Thomas
the previous week.
second half, Household Plumbing
was awarded a penalty shot which
made the score 2-0. The game end-
ed with London scoring with about
one minute left to clinch the 3-0
win.
Exeter hosted Wallacetown
Strike Force on May 20 for their
first home game of the season. De-
spite the terrible weather condi-
tions, they went ahead with the
game. Wallacetown gained the lead
early with three quick goals in the
first half.
Although down three goals, Exet-
er did not give up getting a quick
goal at the start of the second half
by Faye Murray who was able to
dribble in as close as th.• 18 yard
box without being attacked by a de-
fender. She managed to get a good
shot away which got past the goal-
ie.
Twenty minutes later, Exeter got
on the board again with a goal by
Robyn Carnochan, making the
score a close 3-2. Although Exeter
had many scoring chances in the
second half, rain and muddy field
conditions kept them from getting
the third goal to tie the game. Exet-
er's, defenceayed a very strong
t orad" alit 1dnly allowing two
shots on net.
Exeter's next game is on
Wednesday June 12 in St. Thomas
at 8:30 p.m..
day a race was held from Kingston.
a sttatght-ii,ne diAtanee of 26Q mile,[

tered 50 pigeons. These birds were
released at 7:00 a.m. and two of the
de Haan pigeons landed on their
home -loft in Exeter at 11:48 a.m.
Finpl calculations showed that they
easily won position one and two.
Mitch Szczech took position three,'
eight and nine, and Norm Hardy
sneaked in for fourth. The Winters
pigeons flew well in this race, too
and took positions five, six and sev-
en. Morgan Freele clocked a pigeon
that took tenth place.
Now the focus is on conditioning
the pigeons for a tougher test: a
race from St. Jerome, P.Q., a dis-
tance of 650 kms.
