Trucking company benefits
from communication system
By Breads Burke
T -A Reporter
EXETER - Veri Trucking Inc., is
the first fleet in Canada to imple-
ment the Highway Master mobile
communication and information
management system.
Veri introduced the
method, which was new
to the United States in
1993, to its fleet in No-
vember 1994 and has
since reaped rewards.
Using the wireless
technology, which costs
$2,750 to install per truck, means
drivers no longer have to rely on
pay phones or pagers. The inter-
active technique involves the trans-
mitting of messages in both direc-
tions simultaneously without inter-
ference from physical barriers
along the roadside, which tends to
occur with satellite communica-
tions.
According to Veri General Man-
ager Mike Hogan, this is a cheaper
cellular system per
minute for drivers.
And, by authorizing
telephone numbers
and having calling
cards for personal
calls, truck companies
maintain better con-
trol over communica-
tion costs inferred by drivers.
By speeding up the transmission
of information, the system also im-
proves efficiency for customers and
keeps drivers in touch with their

companies and families.
The setup is based on an en-
hanced seamless cellular network
for voice and data communications
and relies on Global Positioning
System for vehicle monitoring.
For data display, drivers are
equipped with screens the size of
rear-view mirrors on their dashes.
Computer-generated maps and
charts let fleet dispatchers know
where The trucks are at all times, a
system that proves efficient for
emergencies and thefts. Hogan said
last year two stolen trucks in the
United States were traced through
this technology.
"We've had some real problems
(at) first," he said, referring to get-
ting the system up and running.
But now that 153 trucks hooked

The Exeter Lions club wishes to thank the
following sponsors listed below. Because
of these community -minded businesses we
were able to bring John Kaplan's "Magic Bus Show" to Exeter on
May 27th.
Not only did we bring an evening of family entertainment to
Exeter, but also realized a profit of $1,000. These funds have been
ear -marked for community youth oriented activities.
The public response has been encouraging and we look forward to
bringing the "Magic Bus" back to Exeter in a couple of years.
Thanks again to all those who sponsored this great evening, to all
those who came out and to all those Lions who helped.
