Students join HOMME program ILDERTON - Students are join- ing with the HOMME program to collect pennies in communities across Middlesex County Saturday june 1. Labelled the Pesky Pennies Chal- lenge, the drive calls for student volunteers to stand outside local bus:. esses with blue containers be- tween the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to receive donations. All mo- nies collected will go directly to support HOMME which is a volun- teer -driven service of the Victorian Order of Nurses for seniors and dis- abled adults. The organization's, work includes meals on wheels, transportation, Wellness Clinics, foot care clinics, friendly visiting, and telephone re- assurance. HOMME serves all of Middlesex County. County Coordinator of the Chal- lenge is Cheryl Curtis, who is also Coordinator of HOMME services in the Eastern region of the county. Her Ilderton telephone number is 666-2324 or 1-800-561-1555. It is expected that many business- es in the county will keep one of the blue containers on display dur- ing the month of June for the con- venience of the public who miss the volunteers on the first of the month. Busy schedule coming up at Crediton United CREDITON - The next four weeks will be a busy time for the congregation of Crediton United Church. This coming Sunday, May 26, the Sunday School under the direction of superintendent Harry Schroeder will be in charge of the regular ser- vice at 10 a.m. The program will feature a chil- dren's Christian comedy magic show with Norman the Magician. Ml ages are invited to join in on the fun. The service will be followed by an old-fashioned Sunday School picnic and games. A yard sale will be held on the church lawn on Saturday, June 1. The following day. June 2, the church will celebrate its an- niversary service. Special music will be presented by the McLin- chey sisters.lncluded in the service will be confirmation and reception of new members. On Sunday, June 23, the annual Decoration Sunday will be held Outdoors at the cemetery, if weather permits. Family Fun Day Stephen Central Public School Is inviting everyone to come out to a fun day for the whole family. On Saturday, June 15 from Ito 6 p.m. there will eatertaimrnent for every- one. Games, food, crafts tea MOO, Penn• auction and lots of games that students and volunteers have organized will keep your family happy and also give you time to visit with firiands and neighbours. Seniors organizer speaker at Grand Bend UCW meeting GRAND BEND - Grand Bend United Church Women met Thurs- day afternoon May 9 in the Sunday School rooms at church. Guest speaker was Dorothea Knights on her work with Senior Citizens. In 1961, Dorothea, who is a registered nurse, and her husband Cecil had their nursing home closed as well as others in Ontario and Knights re- alized the need for Seniors to get together to talk, play games or do crafts. So she was instnunental in organizing the First Seniors Centre in Windsor in 1961, with a grant from the government then led by Premier Bill Davis. By 1964 there were two Senior Centres in Windsor and presently all over Ontario. She has met many interesting people including the Queen and the Queen Mother. She also organized the first Meals on Wheels program in 1972, spoke in Chicago on health care in Canada, and received a medal for communi- ty work in Canada in 1992 from Governor General Ray Gnatshya' in Ottawa UCW At a recent UCW meeting, open- ing worship was given by Irene Kennedy. Scripture from Mark 8 was read by Mary Wilson, fol- lowed by a hymn singalong accom- panied by Clara Watson at the pia- no. Roll call was answered by 31 women reading a short article from the United Church Observer. Presi- dent Evelyn Johnson conducted business and reported that she and Beale Keyes attended the London Conference in St. Thomas, at First United Church on April 15,16. Their theme was "Weave Us To- gether." Happy Birthday was sung for the members with May birthdays. Next meeting will be a potluck lunch at Old Orchard park at 12:30. Laura Flewelling closed with prayer. Lunch was served by Gloria Mousseau and Marian Maguire. Golden Agers Grand Bend Golden Agers held their bi-weekly euchre on May 8 with 11 tables in play. Winners were: Ladies high Verna Lovie, La- dies low Lillian Best, Ladies most lone hands Irene Dixon, Men's high Harold Frnkbeiner, Mens low won by Nola Love playing a man's card, Men's most lone hands a tic between Cleve Brophey and Hugh Griffeth. The next euchre is scheduled for May 22 at the Legion. United Church news May 12 was Christian Family Sunday at Grand Bend United Church Rev. R. Putman talked to the children about Mother's Day. Scriptures from Acts 17:22-31 and John 14:15-21 were read by Ann Russell. The choir's anthem was "Bless This House". Closing hymn for the .congregation was "Would you bless our homes and families?" May 26 is Camp Craft Day. To assist Huron County Children's Aid, families are asked to bring to church to be collected May 26 things such as coloring books, cray- ons, penc!l crayons, washable markers, craft paper, children's scissors, paints, pipe cleaners, yarn, string, glue etc. The Children's Aid will offer a day camp program to over 200 children this summer.
