SPORTS Centennials open season with a win Jeff Lingard leads Exeter scoring three goals for the hat trick EXETER - Jeff Lingard scored three goals for the Exeter Centenni- als during a home game on Sunday as Exeter opened their season with a 3-0 win over the London Scottish. The strong south-west wind was a huge factor as it favored one team in each half forcing the other team to keep the ball down in order to gain any offense. A wellplaced cross from Ruud Vetdhuizen was headed in by Jeff Lingard in the first half. That was the only scoring for the Centennials while they had the wind advantage. In the second half, Lingard com- pleted the hat trick on great in- dividual efforts. Dribbling along the end line, he beat three de- fenders before spotting the Scottish keeper leaving the near post open. Lingard picked the corner, but the ball struck the rear net support and ricocheted out of the net so quickly the referee thought it had hit the post and signalled to play on. Ruban Chelladurai alertly pounced on the rebound while eve- ryone else relaxed to ensure the 2-0 score. Lingard was later credited with the goal. For the third goal, Lingard took a goal kick frotn his own side of cen- tre all the way down and blasted the ball through the keeper's legs. Fury win first game of season Dan Martens and Mark Brintnell had breakaway scoring chances, but just failed to find the net. The Centennials' wall of defense, Joe Martens, Joe D'Ariano, John Flanagan, Ron Wagler and Shawn Rotteau were solid. The Scottish strikers were turned back all through the game. With the score 2-0, Scottish turned up the heat and took ad- vantage of having the wind on their side. They managed a short barrage of good, tricky shots, but Centenni- als keeper George McEwan turned them aside making a number of fly- ing saves to preserve the shutout. Centennials manager Peter Hak- voort, said the wind played a factor in the game but their low, short give and go passes prevented them from losing control of the ball dur- ing the gusty game. With only one game played in their Western Ontario Soccer League Division Two Central schedule, Hakvoort said he already likes what he sees on the field. "I'm really happy...we have a very strong and well balanced team," he said. The Centennials will try to make it 2 and 0 in league play when they visit the Marconi Club in London on Friday night.
