Informationon palliative
care services available
LONDON - I am living with a
terminal illness. My family mem-
ber is dying from a terminal ill-
ness. My mother is dying. What
do I do? Where do I get help?
National Palliative Care week
is an opportunity for people to
learn what is available to them
when such questions arise.
Through Palliative Care, many
individuals and family members
have been supported through a
difficult time. Palliative Care fo-
cuses on quality of life, on the
control of pain and other symp-
toms, and on the often complex
emotional, spiritual, psychologi-
cal, and social needs.
The Regional Pain and Symp-
tom Management Program
(RPSMP) includes the five
counties of Elgin, Huron, Mid-
dlesex, Oxford and Perth. The
RPSMP is working to ensure that
quality palliative care is available
throughout the region through ef-
forts such as identifying ways to
reduce gaps in services, promot-
ing standards for palliative care
and education, and developing lo-
cal teams of palliative careprovid-
ers. As well, information is avail-
able 24 hours a day, seven days a
week to individuals, family mem-
ben, and professional careprovid-
ers concerning pain and symptom
management, palliative services
throughout the region and how to
connect with these services, as
well as related educational mate-
rials. County -based information
services are being developed
which will provide similar infor-
mation at the local level.
