Lions promote magic bus show EXETER - Want to see a mystery guest guillotined? It will appear to happen during John Kaplan's Magic Bus Show at the South Huron Recreation Centre on May 27. Kaplan is a travelling magician from Vancouver who combines magic, comedy, dance, special ef- fects, modern music and audience involvement in a two-hour family performance. "Eighty per cent of what I do is community -oriented," Kaplan was quoted as saying in a recent ad- vertising brochure. "I want to be able to take my magic to people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to enjoy a theatrical magic experience." As well as using new illusions, he adds unexpected twists to magic classics such as the Houdini meta morphosis, which requires escaping from a padlocked crate. Kaplan took an interest in magic at the age of nine when he saw a magician perform. Then his father bought him a magic kit for Christ- mas and his passion for the art form grew. He began his career by ex- changing drinks of Kool-Aid for shows he presented in his base- ment. By the time he was 17, he entertained at birthday parties and other functions. After apprenticing with a ma- gician for five years, Kaplan per- formed for television, cruise ships, concert openings and Expo '86. In 1987 he impressed an audience by making an automobile disappear from the lot of a car dealership. Two years later he wrote, directed and starred in Johnny's House, a comedy -horror illusion production. Kaplan had travelled with an act called Abracadabra but changed to the magic bus format in search of a wider range of program material. Most of his entertainment is for service club fundraising. Exeter's show , is organized by the Lions Club. "We've promoted the event through the schools," said Tom Hartai, who is chairing the pro- gram. The club also sent out letters to area businesses to help cover show costs. Funds from ticket sales will go towards the Lions' support of youth -oriented community pro- grams. Hartai stressed Kaplan's magic is a form of family entertainment. "I don't think there's enough of that," he said. The Magic Bus Show will appear in Forest and Ingersoll this week and continue on to Port Elgin fol- lowing the Exeter performance. Advance $5 tickets are available at Scotia Bank, Stedman's, The Purple Turtle and Thomas H. Fine Menswear. Tickets cost $6 at the door. For more information, call the Magic Bus Hotline at 237-3786.
