Exeter 'Irnperials
lose two igaines
EXETER - After opening the season on a winnini note, the Exeter
Imperials Junior Men's Fastball club lost twice last week,. -
On Tuesday night, they travelled to Woodstock where they were
trounced 12 to 2 by the host club.
Offensively for Exeter, centre fielder Darren Kints led the way
with two singles and two runs scored.
,Designated player, Steve Cook, also singled twice and drove in a
run. Gavin Snell and Greg Dalrymple each doubled. Kevin Gooder
and Jason Feddema shared the pitching duties for Exeter.
On Sunday in St. Marys, the host team avenged an earlier loss to
Exeter with a 3-0 victory. All three runs were scored in the third in-
ning on one hit and two walks and an Exeter error.
, The Imperials managed only one hit off St. Marys pitching.
"We had runners on every base but we didn't get the hits that
counted," said coach Fred Cook. "We played far better than we did
against Woodstock but it was one of those games."
Steve Cook took the loss for Exeter as he gave up three runs, one
earned, on five hits while walking three and striking out 10.
Exeter hosted Shakespeare last night at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre, however, results were'not known at press time. They
will travel to Wellesley Sunday for a 7:30 game.
The Exeter Imperials finished their season last year with a 6-8-2
record making the "B" division playoffs. They were eliminated by
Mitchell in three games, who eventually went on to win the "B"
round.
Fury tie St Thomas in
first game of season
EXETER - The Exeter Fury
kicked off their fourth season of
play in the Western Ontario Soccer
League Sunday afternoon in Exeter
with a 0-0 tie against St. Thomas.
Both teams had to battle a strong
cross wind which limited the num-
ber of scoring chances in the game.
St. 'Thomas had the best opportu-
nity to get a lead in the first half as
the Fury allowed a St. Thomas
player to walk in on a breakaway
but goaltender Luke Sims came up
with a big save.
Minutes later Tom Westerveld
nearly scored as his shot went just
wide of the post.
The second half saw a lot of the
play in the middle of the field with
neither team creating many good
offensive chances.
St. Thomas was awarded a free
kick just outside the eighteen and
the shot was headed for the corner
of the net but once again Sims
made a brilliant diving stop to pre-
serve the tie.
The visitors did manage to put
the ball in the net but the play was
called back as a St. Thomas player
used his hands prior to scoring.
1 think we're going to have a
strong defensive team this season
but we still have to work on scor-
ing," said coach Jeff Playfotot.
The next game for the fury is Fri-
day night in Woodstock,

Grand Bend Salmon and
Trout Derby a big catch
Derby delayed one week due to cold weather
GRAND BEND - After a one
week delay the Grand Bend Sal-
mon and Trout Derby will begin
on Saturday and continue until May
27.
The 8th annual fishing derby
couldn't keep its original date (May
11 -20) because of ice and cold
%lather on Lake Huron, but ac -
o014111, 41 to Bob Green. Chairperson
of the Grand Bend Salmon and
Trout Derby committee and vet-
eran fisherman, • moving it
back a week will only in-
crease the number of fish
caught.
'The later we delay it the
better our chances will be
of catching fish. It all de-
pends on water tem-
perature, once the water
starts to warm up (near
48-50 degrees fahrenheit) the more
active the fish will be," said Green.
"By May 27 the water temperature
for fishing should be ideal."
The Sarnia derby was also de-
layed by one week prompting
Grand Bend to delay theirs so the
two don't overlap.
Green said the last time the derby
was delayed in 1993, they caught
a record number of fish.
Last year over 760 tickets were
sold and just under 300 fish were
hooked.
The top salmon tipped the scales
at 22.62 pounds and the top trout
weighed in at 13.10 pounds.
Anglers from Grand
Bend, Exeter, Sar-
nia, Arva, For-
est,
London
, Kincardine, Goderich
and the United States will pit their
fishing skills against each other to
claim thousands of dollars worth
of cash and prizes.
Prizes will be awarded to the top
15 fish in each of the two species,
but the three largest in each cat-
egory will receive the most cash.
This year, the cash value for the
first place salmon has been in-
creased by $2,000.
The angler who lands the big one
will receive $5,000 in cash, $1,000
in fishing equipment and of
course, fish story bragging rights.
The second place salmon will re -
Co -op Juniors display
poise and confidence
ARVA - The Exeter Co-op Jun-
iors took on a senior team from
Arva on Sunday in their first
league game playing in the Great
Lakes Junior -Senior League.
Despite the extremely cold
'weather conditions the Co-op jun-
looked better prepared than
Arva beating them 14-2 On their ,
home diamond.
Good control on the mound by
pitchers Dwight Gingerich, Mark
Glavin and Darryl Hartman kept
Arva off the bases combining for
'10 strikeouts, giving up six walks
while only allowing seven scattered
hiss.
Second baseman Chad Rammer
handled his duties well attempting
to execute three double plays but
fell short on all three occasions.
Catcher, Dale Hopfs smart play
kept all Arva base runners at bay
with while the Exeter bats kept
warm with Chad Rammer hitting a
triple and a single, Darryl Hartman
doubled and singled and Scot
Kemp blasted a grand slam horn
run on a line shot up the middle.
Mark Glavin, Bill Hodge, Dale
Hopf, and Jason Maskell all con-
tributed, timely singles in this con-
vincing victory over Arva.
"AH aspects of our pitching, de-
fense and offense came together.
This Exeter squad played with a lot
of poise and confidence," said
Coach Gary Hartman.
The Co-op Juniors will play their
season home opener Thursday
against Strathroy with Scot Kemp
and Dennis McCann starting on
the mound. Exeter is still waiting
fbr pitchers Shawn Gillespie and
Derek Masse to return from their
respective teams in the United
States raising the Exeter pitching

The top trout is worth $1,000, the
second place trout will receive

$250.
Green said the lake is stocked
with 250,000 Pacific Salmon and
Rainbow Trout every year by the
Bluewater Hatchery. Lake . Trout
occur naturally but are harder to
find.
Both species are good fighting
fish and if you hook into a big one
it's not uncommon to fight for 20
minutes before reeling it in.
"It's very different from river
fishing, there's a lot of waiting but
when you catch something it's not
going to be two pounds, it's going
to be big," he said.
Due to this highly specialized
sport fishing, expensive equipment
is required so derby committee
members are offering chartered
boating services including rod and
tackle.
Tickets for the Grand Bend Der-
by are $15 this year and dockage
and launching is free all week for
derby ticket holders.
