Eight players were recognized for their contributions. Mike Robb and Steve Hudson received Most Val- uable Player awards, Keith Robson was named Top Defenceman, Mike Bodnar was Most Improved Player, Chad Greenlee was named Rookie of the Year, Mike Ja- remchenko received the Effort, Leadership and Sportsmanship award and Trevor Emms was the team's Leading Scorer. Emms scored 22 goals and ac- cumulated 31 assists in 37 games during the regular season and notched eight points • in the playoffs. The last award handed out was new this year, and it was the only one bearing a photograph. The Richard Huffman Memorial Award was introduced and named after a young supporter of the hock- ey club who lost his fight with can- cer recently. "Richard was never able to play hockey but it was the' love of his life and he never missed a Lucan Irish game," said president Ann Hardy. The award went to Steve Mathews. The recent legislation changing Ontario Liquor Regulations to al- low bars and restaurants to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. will also allow the sale and service of alcoholic beverages on the playing areas of golf courses. Previously, golfers could only consume alcohol inside the club house but now courses can apply to have their licenses extended outside legally allowing golfers to have a drink while they're play- ing. According to area golf club owners, it is a welcome change. "This new law comes into line with reality," said Janet Mason co- owner of Exeter Golf Club. "I would be surprised if there was a golf club in Ontario that hasn't seen drinking on their course." Gib Dow Junior, owner of Ironwood Golf Club said before the new law came into effect, golf club owners were put into the awk- ward position of enforcing no alcohol on the course even though most agree it should be allowed. "It makes our job a lot easier. Nobody wants to be the bad guy," said Dow adding the new law brings Ontario into line with other provinces and golf courses in the united States. "I can only see pos- itive benefits from it. People enjoy having a few beers while they golf, just like a bowler would in a licensed bowling alley." However, owners are still responsible for their patrons and the same drinking and driving laws apply to motorized golf carts. Mason said she doesn't expect alcoholic privileges will be abused, nor does she think there will be an increased consumption. She feels golfers just like having the option to drink if they wish, knowing they can do it legally. "People are not going to the golf course because they want to drink, they're playing golf because they're interested in the game," said Mason. "But I think a lot of golfers will be glad things are go- ing this way."
