"Richard was never able to play

New liquor law
allows alcohol:
on golf courses
EXETER - Having a golf club in one hand and a martini in the
other won't be a taboo on the greens this season.
The recent legislation changing Ontario Liquor Regulations to al-
low bars and restaurants to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. will also allow
the sale and service of alcoholic beverages on the playing areas of
golf courses.
Previously, golfers could only consume alcohol inside the club
house but now courses can apply to have their licenses extended
outside legally allowing golfers to have a drink while they're play-
ing.
According to area golf club owners, it is a welcome change.
"This new law comes into line with reality," said Janet Mason co-
owner of Exeter Golf Club. "I would be surprised if there was a golf
club in Ontario that hasn't seen drinking on their course."
Gib Dow Junior, owner of Ironwood Golf Club said before the
new law came into effect, golf club owners were put into the awk-
ward position of enforcing no alcohol on the course even though
most agree it should be allowed.
"It makes our job a lot easier. Nobody wants to be the bad guy,"
said Dow adding the new law brings Ontario into line with other
provinces and golf courses in the united States. "I can only see pos-
itive benefits from it. People enjoy having a few beers while they
golf, just like a bowler would in a licensed bowling alley."
However, owners are still responsible for their patrons and the
same drinking and driving laws apply to motorized golf carts.
Mason said she doesn't expect alcoholic privileges will be
abused, nor does she think there will be an increased consumption.
She feels golfers just like having the option to drink if they wish,
knowing they can do it legally.
"People are not going to the golf course because they want to
drink, they're playing golf because they're interested in the game,"
said Mason. "But I think a lot of golfers will be glad things are go-
ing this way."

tion game on Sunday at the Alvin
Willert Field in Exeter.
Dwight Gingerich, Scot Kemp

EXETER - Three runs in the bot-
tom of the first inning proved to be
the difference as the Exeter Imperi-
als Junior Men's Fastball club
opened their 1996 season with a 4-
3 victory over St. Marys.
Catcher Gavin Snell and second
baseman Chris Kennedy, who both
reached base on walks by St. Marys
pitcher Dennis Gower, scored on a
triple by Greg Dalrymple.
A ground rule double by starting
pitcher Steve Cook then scored
Dalrymple. A long home run by
centre fielder Darren Kints in the
bottom of the sixth inning account-
ed for the fourth Exeter run.
Cook went the distance on the
mound for Exeter, allowing eight
hits, while striking out five, walk-
ing one and hitting a batter.
On Friday night, the Imperials
dropped a 4 -1 decision to Mitchell
