Arbor week celebration
planned in Grand Bend
GRAND BEND - The Village of
Grand Bend Main Street Advisory
Committee is very proud to an-
nounce that the next phase of the
streetscape enhancement project
will continue with the planting of
60 native red male trees in conjunc-
tion with Arbor Week. The planting
of the trees will take place on
Wednesday, May 8 at 12 p.m.
The streetscape initiative is the
cooperative effort of the Village of
Grand Bend, area merchants and
residents. "The "Local Pride Com-
munity Project" will enhance the
appearance of the Village's Main
Street, combining cobblestone
walk ways, newly planted trees and
stylish park benches.
At a present cost of $85,000.
longer term plans include the pro-
vision of an electrical supply to the
base of each tree for decorative
Christmas style lighting.
Native Red Maple trees are slow
growing with Tush green leaves in
the summer and fiery red colored
leaves in autumn. Area residents
are encouraged to view and experi-
ence the on-going renovations in
Grand Bend year round.

Forum will focus on family violence
By David Emslie
EXETER - Family violence from
a man's perspective will be the fo-
cus ofiin, informational forum to be
4 itfexeter latertItlis month. •
The forum, called The Untold
Story - A Man's Perspective on
Family Violence, will be hosted by
the men's group Balance Beam at
the Exeter Lions Youth Centre on
May 23.
Balance Beam co-founder Tony
Vorsteveld noted that Balance
Beam is a men's group which
works to help men with men's is-
sues, from difficulties at work to re-
lationship problems.
He noted that Balance Beam de-
cided to host The Untold Story to
show the male perspective on fami-
ly violence, which, he said, "has
been pretty well unspoken since the
feminist movement took it on 20
years ago." He added that he hopes
the forum will also "help dispel the
myth of male power."
During the sessions, which will
run from 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., a
wide variety of speakers will give
15 minute addresses, and the ad-
dresses will be followed by open
discussion among those in atten-
dance.
Commenting on the choice of
speakers, Vorsteveld noted that
Kennedy did his thesis on the
men's, movement's response to
family violence, while Easton's al-
liance has reached out to 2,000
men, 60 percent of whom were
falsely accused of assault. Speakers
who deal with women's issues
were also invited, Vorsteveld said,
"because they deal with the per-
spective that society deals with."
He added that he didn't feel it
would be fair to hold a forum and
only hear from the men's side of
the issue, and noted that perhaps
this forum will bring the two sides
together.
As to his address for the forum,
he stated he will be discussing the
stigma of the male batterer, and
"what I believe are some of the
myths of the male batterer."
Brochures regarding the forum
have been distributed throughout
the county, with doctors, lawyers,
therapists, the Children's Aid Soci-
ety and at other locations, as well
as with schools. Vorsteveld
stressed that all are invited to attend
the forum, and can do so by regis-
tering with the Canadian .Mental
