Q. We want to repaint the meters,'of
our house. Hors nal we decide whether
to use a latex or alkyd paint?
A. Today's latex paints are every bit
as good as alkyd or oil-based
paints. Latex paint can be applied
on most surfaces, including
masonry and aluminum skiing.
Some surfaces will require a primer
undercoat contrary to popular
belief. Latex may be applied over
exterior oil paint if the oil paint is
tightly bonded to the surface and
degkxaed. Today's oil and latex
paints both offer excellent quality
and coverage. The advantage of
latex is easy clean-up of brushes,
trays and spills with soap and water. Itis almost odorless,
Thimble with water and resistant to fade, fume and mildew.
You can buy latex in a wide range of pre -mixed or custom
mixed colors. Prices are comparable with other types of paint
sooxtimes even a tad less expensive with either latex or oil,
90% of the work is proper preparation of the su-face. The
time you invest in leaning, scraping, patching and preparing
the surface will be time well spent. Hensall 262002

WOOD DISCOLORATION
causes t wood
around the windows to turn
black?
A.The discoloration of
wood around windows is
usually caused by the
formation of moulds and
bacteria which are present
in the air, and find a
sultable place for growth
in the damp corners of
wood. The cause of this
dampness is condensation
forming on the irside of
the window and the easiest way to prevent it is
to reduce the humidity in your house.

once -a -year. This is done at
our stores at no charge and
cleaned as well. Claws do

Q. Why do I need a RRSP?
Suppose I told you that you
d only two chokes. You
'they pay yourself a set
ount each year or you pay
the government. Effectively,
this is what a RRSP does,
'there the money is set aside in
RRSP for further use or
id to our friendly
ovemment in the form of
gher taxes. For example, if
ou made $35,000 per year and
made a 16300 RRSP
ontribution, you would save $2500 (approx) m
me taxes. The alternative is to not contribute to an
RRSP and pay higher taxes. Over a 40 year period,
ou would save approx 9100,000 in taxes; not to
men how much that 9100,000 would have grown

WATER
Q. Are filters good enough at
cleaning bacteria contaminants,
etc. out of my drinking water?
A. Generally, some kind of
water filter is better than
nothing at all, however, in
certain cases filters can be
much worse than using
nothing because they can
become a "host" for bacterial
growth and other organic
contamination. Many
contaminants including
chemicals, harmful minerals
and organics CANNOT be
filtered out effectively. A good example of this is the
Cryptosporidium Parasite outbreak which crippled
Collingwood's water supply recently. Dbtilling la still
the best method of removing all types of water
contaminants. The Lifetime disHIlerbthiy and filiera

Q. My carpets are stretching and
making creases. How can 1 solve
this problem and what kind of
cost is involved?
A. There are two main causes
for this problem: 1) a poor
installation 2) a very high
traffic area.
In most cases this happens if
the carpet has not been power
stretched and the area is large.
If it has been power stretched
and you still experience this,
you most likely have a high
traffic area and the carpet is
experiencing normal wear and tear. These areas are
normally hallways and may need restretching every
couple of years. The cost of this service varies
depending on the size of room but average would be
approx. $50.00.

COMMUNITY LIVING SOUTH HURON
Q. How have the government
cutbacks affected Community
Living?
A. As with any business
facing financial stress, the
agency entered into a review
of its staff structure to
determine where overlaps
were and to determine if we
were using staff appropriately
to meet the objectives of the
agency. The outcome of the
review was a restructuring
and elimination of a senior •
management level. No services to people have been
cut to date. A different means of planning with people
and families is being developed which focuses on a
mix of paid and non -paid supports around a person.
