Volunteers honored ILDERTON - The theme "You're a Star" was most appropri- ate as the outstanding contributions of Eastern HOMME volunteers were celebrated on April 22. Volunteers from Lucan, Bid- dulph, West Nissouri, London and Lobo Townships donated almost 4,000 hours of caring last year! Seven people were presented with their one year certificate and 22 re- ceived their five year certificate and pin. Over 100 people presently volunteer in this region, with welt over 450 volunteering country- wide. Entertainment was provided by Ted Peters (alias Charlie Far- quarson), birthday cake from VON (90 years young!) and with the help of friends, VON Board Members and local politicians, a shining year of accomplishments was honored. HOMME, administered by the VON Middlesex -Elgin Branch, is a non-profit volunteer agency that serves seniors and disabled adults through programs that include visit- ing, transportation, meals on wheels and Wellness Clinics. Area women enjoy annual `Break Away KIRKTON - Once again, a full house was present as 325 women, including exhibitors attended the fourth year of the Zion U.C.W.'s Ladies Break Away. The tables were set with yellow and green and were adorned by daffodils. Margaret Hern was emcee for the day which commenced with Gail Baker talking about skin care. An excellent talk about surviving breast cancer was given by Audrey Harloff and Brenda MacLean. Er- nie Miatello of Huron Apothecary followed, giving information about taking prescribed medication and using generic medication. Gwen Dykeman demonstrated her cook- ing talents with light cooking. The shish kabobs looked great. Follow- ing lunch, the afternoon program started off with Marty from Klomp's Landscaping explaining fertilizing and care of perennials. Laura Overholt made sure no one was sleeping as she took everyone through a series of stretches. Schaefer's Ladies Wear and Pet - Dedication In acknowledgement of Health and Safety of co-workers in Ontario, CUPE 2597 held a luncheon and dedication at the Exeter Public School on Sunday. Janice Bisback, CUPE president and Frank Stilson, of the London Occupation Safety and Health Information Service dedicated a paving stone to be placed in MacNaughton Park in memory of Ma- rie Hibbert who was killed in a vehicle accident on her way to work. The event was also a commemoration of the na- tional Day of Mourning and the Workers Compensation Act that was introduced April 28, 1914.' Models were Laura Hern, Ann Morley, Marina Jaques, Mar- garet Hern, Barbara French, June Miller, Sandra Hern, Andrea Hern, Sue Johnson, Nancy Brock and Becky Hern. Throughout the day many donat- ed door prize draws were given. Adding to the day were the exhibi- tors who set up: Bray-tronics C'8 puters, Gwen Coward's Water Cot - ours and Wood Products, Nancy Brock's children books, Floyd and Shirley Coopers' Antiques, Lois Hodgins antique gadgets, Country Cravings, Eileen Hem's Education- al and Counselling Resource Centre and Wuerth Shoes.
