Karate grading
Exeter Karate School held a grading recently with the following students receiving their

THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC
On the first Sunday in May each year, ceremonies are held across the
country to honor the thousands of men and women, who served in the Royal
Canadian Navy and the Canadian Merchant Navy during the battle of The
Atlantic, 1939-1945.
lb tb -)se who paid the supreme sacrifice in this the longest running battle
of the war: 31 warships of the Royal Canadian Navy went down with the
loss of 2,024 personnel.
Some 12,000 Canadian seamen and seawomen served in the Canadian
and Allied Merchant Navy, of which, 1,466 were lost at sea in the 75 ships
that were sunk.
On this day, May 5th, we the members of the R.E. Pooley Br. #167, Exeter,
ON, honor those who served and played such an important role in the
outcome of WWII.

`Fiddler on the Roof' presented In St. MaryS
Several people from
the Granton area have
enjoyed the play.

Toonders visited their son recently
at Sylvan Lake, Alberta,
Several Granton people have
been enjoying "Fiddler on the
Roof' by the St. Marys Community
Players at the Town Hall on the
weekend.
Sympathy is extended to the fam-
ily of Mary Bowman who died at
Kingsway Lodge in St. Marys on
April 24 and was laid to rest in the
Granton Cemetery.
A huge crowd attended the annu-
al Fish Fry at the Community Cen-
tre in Kirkton on Sunday, including
many from the Granton area.
Muriel Lewis attended the
A.C.W. annual conference held at
the St. Paul's Cathedral in London
on Saturday.
There was no service at the St.
Paul's Church in Kirkton on Sun-
day, but many from the congrega-
tion attended the service at St.
James Anglican Church in St. Mar-
ys.
At the Granton United Church on
Sunday, April 28 Bev Rabbets took
charge of the service in the absence
of Normalie Voakes, when the ser-
mon message was about "Teach me
to pray". The Sunday School chil-
dren are planting a tree to celebrate
Earth Week. April Bryan told
about collecting Campbell soup la-
bels, proceeds of which will be

EXETER - Volunteer Week,
April 21-27 was celebrated at Exet-
er Villa. The motto, evident
throughout the week, was "Volun-
teers our brightest stars."
ON Tuesday, an afternoon tea,
program and presentation took
place in the resthome lounge.

Dougall, administrator. It was re-

dents showed their appreciation in
song under the direction of activi-
ties director Nancy Tweddle. Sing-
ers were Mary Connelly, Jean Lee,
Jean Piner, Esther Moffatt, Pat
Skinner and Case Allen.
A reading by Mary Connelly and
a trumpet solo by Frans Booge-
mans completed the entertainment.
Mayor Ben Hoogenboom assisted
Nancy and Mary Jane for the pres-
entation of service pins, certificates
and travel mugs to each volunteer.
Tea and squares were served to
the residents and volunteers by vil-
la staff. Sally Lou Raymond
thanked everyone on behalf of the
volunteers.
On Thursday evening volunteers
gathered in the beautifully decorat-
ed resthome lounge to enjoy a deli-
cious turkey dinner. Staff and resi-
dents of Exeter Villa wish to say
"thankyou" during this special
week to the volunteers.

Florence McRobert was the host-
ess for the Granton Women's annu-
al meeting Tuesday afternoon, with
the paying of fees and a sign of
spring. Muriel Lewis opened the
meeting with a reading "The Prom-
ise of Easter".
Florence McRobert read the an-
nual financial report and a donation
was made to Pennies for Friend-
ship. Arrangements were made to
attend the District Annual at
Clandeboye on May 16 and an in-
vitation was read for North Lobo's
70th anniversary at Coldstream 'on
May 14.
The program followed with eve-
ryone taking part when Florence
McRobert had a joke about open-
ing the car door, Florence Bryan
read a Holy Dilemma, Alma Nich-
olson had a joke, Muriel lewis read
"Add Some Laughter" and Elsie
Donn had a jumbled word content
of things to take on a trip, which
was won by Florence McRobert. !
