Exeter Minor Hockey wraps up 1995/96, seasop
Exeter Minor Hockey Association recognized their top players in two seperate award ceremonies'_
EXETER - The Exeter Minor
Hockey Association (EMHA)
wrapped up its season Tuesday
night with the second of two wind-
up award ceremonies.
This year EMHA . executives
chose to hold the event on two sep-
erate nights with the junior level
Pre -Tyke, Novice and
Atoms recognizing
their outstanding
players on April 4,
while the senior level
Peewee, Bantam,
Midget and Juveniles
were recognized last
Tuesday.
"Splitting them was
something new this
year and I think it
worked a lot better
than previous years," said Minor
Hockey President Don Richardson.
In the past, EMHA used to lump
T.veryone together and it was dif-
ficult to keep the younger players
interested since they become rest-
less very quickly. Richardson said
while the juniors had their own
wind-up this year, which included
the traditional donuts and re-
freshments, the senior wind-up fea-
tured a roast beef dinner and in-
cluded a guest speaker.
"The dinner idea was a huge suc-
cess. As far as I know, every mid-

get player except for two attended
and all of the juvenile players were
there," said Richardson.
Between the two sessions, 35 mi-
nor hockey players were honored
for their accomplishments through-
out the regular season and in the
playoffs with most receiving an
award for one of three
categories: most
sportsmanlike, 'most
improved and most
dedicated.
Although, Exeter
didn't boast an All -
Ontario team this
year, the Juvenile
Chiefs made it to the
semi-finals losing to
the Listowel Cy-
clones who eventually
went on to claim the provincial ti-
tle, the Peewee rep team won a
number of tournaments over the
season and the Midgets were only
one goal away from advancing to
their semi-final round.
Richardson declined to highlight
any particular team saying all of
them enjoyed a level of achieve-
ment. However, he feels the real
success story involved the two
large tournaments EMHA hosted
during the winter. The Bill Batten
Memorial tournament held in No-
vember and the Christmas home

tournament allowed every player
in minor hockey to play in a large
hockey tournament, one of Rich-
ardson's main objectives as pres-
ident.
"We had a tournament for every-
body. Every kid in minor hockey
had the opportunity to play in a
tournament at home and that's been
one of my major goals. We strive to
treat each kid the same and give all
of them an equal amount of ice
time," he said.
Richardson,credits the success of
this year's . program to the ex-
ecutives and volunteers who have
dedicated countless hours to minor
hockey.
"Minor hockey survives on its
volunteers. Everybody who helped
gave it 110 per cent, from the
coaches right down to the hockey
parents. We all gelled together like
a hockey team."
Richardson is stepping down as
president and he hopes the future
president and executives don't lose
sight of what EMHA is all about.
"We're not trying to churn out
NHL players here. Our long-term
goal is to teach kids how to play
recreational hockey and to have
fun...and I think we have ac-
complished that."
