Volunteers
needed for
program
HURON COUNTY - Special
Steps is a program to provide activ-
ity and companionship to people
with Alzheimer disease and to pro-
vide times of relief for caregivers
of people with Alzheimer Disease.
The Huron -Perth Branch of the
Victorian Order of Nurses (VON)
has expressed interest in working
with Alzheimer Society to make
this program available throughout
the county.
The Alzheimer Society will un-
dertake to recruit volunteers to be
trained by the professional person-
nel of VON. The training will help
the volunteer to confidently, safely
and independently keep their Alz-
heimer companion active through a
walking program,
It is planned that Blatin volunteer
will spend time on ti insular bail
with a designated Alzheimer com-
panion. When weather permits, i.
will involve walking together. In
times of inclement weather, the vol-
unteer would spend time visiting
with their companion indo:jre. It is
expected that the program will ben-
efit the person with Alzheimer Dis-
ease through both physical and
mental stimulation.
Once the caregiver is comfortable
and confident with the volunteer,
he or she will be able td leave the
two new companions together
while benefiting from a time of re-
lief.
We now have five caregivers in
the county that would be interested
in this program. If you have time to
give and would like to become a
trained volunteer In this area,
please call the Alzheimer Society
of Huron County at 482-1482 or 1
800-561-5012 and ask for Shelley
Rodgers -Bedard.
