Huron tourism fighting for
share of discretionary dollar
EXETER - Huron small business
operators were told at Thursday's
7th annual Tourism Event they
will have to light for their share of
tourism visitors.
"You make the difference
through managing the dynamics of
visitors," guest speaker Michael
Haywood, Director of the School of
Hotel and Food Administration at
the University of Guelph, told
members of the Huron tourism in-
dustry.
The Huron Tourism Association
Meld this year's Annual Tourism
Event and Brochure Swap at the
Exeter Pentecostal Tabernacle. The
all -day event gave people involved
in the industry an opportunity to
meet and network with their peers,
distribute and collect brochures and
hear three professional speakers.
This year's theme of the event
was "Your Tourism Business - Get-
ting it, Keeping it, Protecting it."
George. Brophy, a Barrister and
Solicitor in Lucknow, explained
key elements of legal protection
for tourism businesses.
Brophy stressed the "duty of
care" is an important part of the
Occupiers Liability Act. Although
each case is site specific, liability
cases will use the "reasonable per-
son rule" to determine if the oper-
ator breached their duty to make
the premise safe for the visiting
public.
Suggestions to protect small busi-
ness include the following:
•act reasonably, have a stranger
inspect the premise and put in writ-
ing what was found as well as any
remedial action taken

smashed to gain entry. According
to OPP, stolen property includes a
TV and clock.

Tina Heathers, a consultant and
owner of "Future By Design" in
Kippen also addressed registrants at
the tourism event by discussing
importance of keeping customers
happy.
In order to bring people into the
area through word of mouth, the
customer must be satisfied and a
loyal customer becomes an am-
bassador of the business.
The speakers were followed by a
brochure swap, networking time
and a dinner provided by the Exeter
Agriculture Society.
