Peewees fight hard battle in. Stephen Twp.

HURON PARK - The Stephen Township Peewees lost their bid for a second
consecutive All -Ontario championship after dropping three home games to Port
Carling over the Easter weekend.
The Peewees were only three points away from clinching the provincial title
after earning a win and a tie in Port Carling last weekend. A win and a tie would
have been enough and with Stephen hosting the last three games of the series, it
looked as if another Ontario championship was
within reach.
However, Port Carling came ready to play and
jumped to an early lead in the first game. J.R.
Davies scored Stephen's only goal in the first and
he was followed by Jeff Finkbeiner who scored
twicein the second. They were assisted by Robert

period, but the Peewees still trailed by two going
into the third.
Captain, Shawn Sherwood rallied his team in the
third scoring a goal with help from Glavin who
picked up the assist, and Davies scored his second
of the game after he was set up in front of the net by
Lord and Sherwood. But the team effort wasn't
enough as Stephen lost their first game at home 8-6.
With the series now even, both teams met the
next day for game four knowing the winner would
go-ahead in the series. Saturday's game was perhaps
the most important of the series, and both teams
played like it.
The highly emotional game displayed continuous
end-to-end action with numerous goal mouth
scrambles on both ends of the ice. -
Davies struck first for Stephen scoring an unassisted goal midway through the
first period. Finkbeiner added to Davies' solo effort scoring their second goal
after taking an assist from Bryan Stuckless. But Port Carling responded with one
of their own with less than two minutes left in the frame.
Despite spending most of the second period killing off penalties the game
remained close with both teams exchanging one goal each. Davies scored his
second of the game with Glavin and Sherwood picking up the assist.
Stephen was up 3-2 going into the third period but Port Carling tied it up
early bringing the teams back to even terms.
With only 3:46 left on the clock Port Carling scored a go-ahead goal and
attempted to burn off the rest of the clock playing tight defense, however, they
took a penalty with only 1:30 left in the game. That was the break Stephen
needed.
Opting not to pull the goalie for the extra attacker, Stephen' relied on their
power play unit to save the day and they did, coming up with a huge goal with

The fans erupted into hysterics and the Stephen bench cleared as the players
congratulated one another on the ice.
The momentum seemed to be on Stephen's side as they entered the overtime
period, however, Port Carling scored with only 43 seconds left to win the
contest.
The gut -wrenching loss was tough to take for the team and it may have
affected their performance the next day. Stephen came up flat in the fifth and
final game and were unable to score losing 4-0.
"ft was a tight game but they outplayed us in the third period," said assistant
coach Dick Lord. "We had a short bench and we just couldn't keep going."
Despite the loss, Lord said the Peewees kept their cool and finished the game
with honor earning the respect of Port Carling who he credits as being a hard
working team.
"I have to give them full credit, -they came.up big. We didn't give them the
win...they came in and took it."
