New field hockey
team in Exeter
By Chris Skalkos
T A Reporter
EXETER - There's a new team
on the block.
Last week Exeter officially intro-
duced its own field hockey team
which will play in an all-womens
field hockey league. The 14 team,
league encompasses most of
Southern Ontario with Exeter play-
ing in the South West division.
This is the first •time' Exeter has
had a women's field hockey team,
even though the league is not new.
Team manager and player Pau-
line VanDerLey said she organized
tt'e team because she, bought there

I really like playing field hockey
and I would rather play here , than
travel to London," said VanDerLey
who will also umpire for the
league.
It seems that others also, share her
view.
The Exeter team currently has 18
players, most of whom are South
Iluron District High School stu-
dents who play for the Panthers,
and alumni who also played for the.
school team.
South Huron has enjoyed a win-
ning tradition in field hockey for
the last five years. Coached by Jim
Workman, the Panthers have won
four OFSAA championships and
continue to nm a strong program.
However, unless graduating stu-
dents plan on playing field hockey
in university there is no where else
locally (or them to play.
Until'pow.
VanDerLey said the new Exeter
based team will give these players
an opport(tnity to continue playing
after high school.
"We're hoping to provide some
of these experienced players with a
training ground to cant' this mo-
mentum.further,' she added.

„ eter's new team and she hopes
more , ex -field hockey 'players will
, come forward to join their ranks.
Breaking into a new league with
such a young and talented team
will give Exeter a head start over a
team starting from scratch and
VanDerLey believes a successful
fust year will generate more inter-
est among local athletes who are
considering joining
"We're hoping for a strong first
season...we'd like to show the
league what Exeter can do at this
end of the county," she said.
