Stephen Atoms tied in final series The Stephen Township Atom team have home ice advantage for last playoff games By Chris Skalkos T -A Reporter WOODVILLE - The Stephen Atoms emerged from a wild shoot- out in Woodville over the weekend with a 1-1 record in their quest for an AII-Ontario Championship. A total of 28 goals were scored between the two teams with Ste- phen losing the first 9-7 on Saturday and winning 11-1 on Sunday. The Atoms kept up with Woodville in the first game, matching them goal for goal, and were ahead by one in the second period. But the third period proved to he disastrous as Woodville exploded for live unanswered goals taking the game 9-7. Jesse Schroeder and Colin Sauder scored a pair of goals for Ste- phen. Jesse McCann, Roman Wilson and Scott Davies added sin- gles. Assists went to Ryan Knee, Kenny Tilley, Shawn Tho►,npson, Jason Stuckless, Davies, Sauder and Wilson. With time to rest, Stephen rebounded in the second game and went on a relentless scoring rampage. Knee and Sauder scored singles, Schroeder, Wilson, McCann added a pair of goals each and Davies recorded a hat trick. All of thein recorded assists as did Thompson, Stuckless and Wes Johnson. Dane Michielsen put on a goaltender clinic allowing only one Woodville goal. "We got production from everybody. The boys were ready and they came out flying;" said Coach Bev Thompson. "They adjusted • well in the second game but I still didn't expect a I I- I romp." Shutting down Woodville's top three skaters proved to be an ef- fective strategy for Stephen and Thompson feels that will he the key to beating them in this series. "Were going to play strong team defense. Good defensive play can often turn into offensive chances," he said. Stephen won the coin toss and will host the fifth and final game at home if it goes that far. They can clinch their second consecutive provincial title in front of a home crowd if they win their next two games. They play Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.-pre- ceding the Stephen vs. Port Carling All -Ontario series. Tied at one, it's still anybody's series, but Thompson said having home ice advantage will be a tremendous asset. "i think we'll get a big local crowd to support us and that means a lot to the boys," said Thompson. EXETER CENTENNIAL MEN'S SOCCER CLUB invites ALL PLAYERS to Tryout ,1i,, r; First Practice, Wed.
