HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1996-04-03, Page 14Page 14 Times -Advocate, April 3, 1996 Huron Board calls for single school system in postcard campaign CLINTON - The Huron County Board of Eduction is initiating a postcard campaign during the month of April that calls for public support of the recommendations for education finance reform in the Sweeney report and the need for a single school system under one governance body. The campaign, Save the Huron Public Education System, circulat- ed 20,000 postcards throughout the county, to be returned to Huron MPP Helen Johns in support of ed- ucation finance reform but against amalgamation with Perth County. The board calls for a new "Com- munity Education Authority" to govern all public education in Hu- roo. "We agree a with the need for ma- jor reform of education finance yet we doubt the necessity for broad geographic restructuring as the es- sential means of reducing non - classroom spending," states the board's response to The Ontario School Board Tast Reduction Force eport. Queensway residents view `Babe' HENSALL - Monday morning at the Queensway Nursing Home in Hcnsall residents worked through their exercise routine. The after- noon was spent playing bingo with Legion Auxiliary women. They have helped at the nursing home for the month of March. Kim Bilcke's group of Girl Guides were in Mon- day evening to visit with their bud- dies. Rev. Verhoog led Worship Ser- vice Tuesday afternoon With a meaningful message for everyone. Resident§ thotoUghly enjoyed their evening spent with the Lakeview Singers, of Lakeview Conservative Mennonite Church. Several residents lingered at Breakfast Club Wednesday morn- ing. In the evening Rest Home Din- ers travelled to Clinton to the "Blue Fountain" restaurant. • Thursday afternoon, Winnie Hut- ton, pastoral care volunteer, was in to minister to residents. Gladys Van Egmont( and her Old Tyme Music Group provided their toe tapping hrand of music when they enter- tained at the March Birthday Party. Birthday greetings went to Everett Gallagher, Marjorie Carey, Isobel. Sproat, Grace Dinney, Blanche Ste- phenson, and Ethel Taylor. In the evening several senior diners stayed to see the video "Babe" shown on the large screen T.V. Resident Council and Operations Group both met on Friday. Several new programs for Retirement Home •were discussed. Presently residents are preparing for a pro- gram presented by the Queensway Players for the April 19 Volunteer Pony and their presentation at the Grand Cove Estates Club House April 28. Coming events April 18, 7 p.m., International Day Australia, with Bill Gibson; April 19, 2 p.m., Volunteer Appre- ciation Party; April 28, 7 p.m., Queensway Players at The Grand Cove Estates Club House. Exeter 4-H club meets EXETER - The Exeter 1I 4-H group gathered recently at Norma Cockwill's home for their second meeting. They opened their meet- ing with the 4-H pledge, the secre- tary's report and the press report. Members answered the roll call "What is your most precious senser' They went outside for an activity, to discover what it would be like to have your senses taken away. They went back inside and dropped a raw egg that was wrapped in foam and put it in a box. It didn't break. Linda had a garbage bag of pieces bf things yogi would use to protect your body ' when you do outdoor ,activities. Then they talked about each piece. They split up into two groups and did a "Sun SA. Rap". They end- ed their meeting with a snack. TY Cancer Society Exeter Mayor Ben Hoogenboom assisted Fran Richie with a flag raising at MacNaughton Park on Thursday to kick off the Cancer Society fundraising campaign. Daffodils were de- livered locally on Friday as part of the effort. 4' I iuron County is preparing a New County Plan. The Plan will deal with community, economic and land use issues. Phase II of the process is a series of workshops, to discuss the values identified in the recently completed Community Action Kits. Everyone is encouraged to attend and particpate In the discussions.
