Teams have successful year
KITCHENER - The Exeter and District Ringette Association had nine
teams play in the Western Ontario Regional Tournament in Kitchener over
the weekend.
With 158 teams from Western Ontario participating in the event Exeter
came away with four gold medals won by the Novice White, Tween Red,
Junior and Womens Red. The Petite "A" team was also successful picking
up a silver medal.
The Exeter Novice team won a gold medal at the
Westem Ontario Regional invitational s on Sunday.

The Exeter Tween "C" won the Huron/Perth last
Wednesday and the Western Ontario Regional In-
vitationals on Sunday. Kerri Fulton tied the final
game against Owen Sound with 0.04 seconds re-
maining in the game and Terri Regier scored the
winner in sudden death overtime with Crystal Davis

JUNIOR - The Junior "C" Ringette team won a gold medal in the "C"
division with an overtime win in Tiverton on Sunday. Down by four goals
at one point the girls played hard to come back with Lauryn Baynham scor-
ing the tieing goal with only 3:26 left in the game. Solid goaltending by
Jannett MacDonald kept Tiverton from getting the go-ahead goal sending
the game into overtime.
Rising to the challenge Alicia Lawrence scored for her team a minute
and a half into the overtime period to clinch the gold medal game.
WOMENS RED - The Womena Intermediate "C" team
won the Gold medal on Sunday beating Woodstock 9-6.
The Womens team came out flying in the Championship
game scoring four quick goals on the overconfident Wood-
stock team. With Exeter controlling the play for most of the
first half, Jayne Rowe and Chris Chappel scored two goals
each and also added an assist. Cheryl McLlwain, Corlette
Elder and Chris Morgan scored singles with assists going to
Julie Ritchie and Gayle Boogemann.
Scoring was siialkin the. second. half .but Morgan and
McLlwain each fired one in past the Woodstock goaltender.
Rowe had the only assist and Angela Gould also played an
outstanding game between the pipes stopping shot after shot
to keep her team in the lead.
On their way to the gold medal final, the Womens Red
lost their first game to Woodstock 6-4, before beating Exet-
er Black 11-4 in the second game, Kincardine 9-2 in the
third and London 7-5 in the fifth game.

The Exeter Petite "A" won the Huron/Perth championship
last Monday in Clinton by defeating Stratford 3-2 in overtime.
Goals were scored by Ashley Gooch (2), Brittney Caldwell (1)
and assists were awarded to Meghan Gaiser, Karly Pinder,
Megan Preszcator, Kendra Mudge, Denise Ritchie, Miranda

recently.

first five games but lost 6-3 in the
provincial finals to Mississauga.

"It was a heartbreaker to lose it in
the finals but I was still proud of
the girls. They proved they could
play with any team in Ontario,"
said Miners. "They
certainly put Huron -
Perth on the map."
The five players,
however, credited
their captain Jessica
Boersma, the team's
top goal scorer, and
their goalie, Jackie
LeBlanc, from Mitch-
ell for their success.
They said they never expected to
be Ontario finalists and the ex-
perience will help them next sea-
son.

Western Regionals.
KITCHENER - The final wrap
up tournament for ringette rook
place in Kitchener -Waterloo this
past weekend with 158 teams com-
peting in different divisions.
This tournament provided both
championship competition and in-
vitational play for teams throughout
Western Ontario.
The Exeter Novice 'C' team with
girls aged seven to 10, competed in
a group of 16 teams. The division
was split into four pools with the
winner of each pool advancing to
the semi-finals.
During round robin pool play Ex-
eter defeated Chatham 10-4 and
Elora 8-1. Exeter's toughest com-
petition came against Waterloo
with goaltender Enid Drummond
making a big save with 20 seconds
left, allowing Exeter to hang on to a
3-2 victory.
Exeter Optimist Novice defeated
league rivals Seaforth 10-5 in the
semi-final game, advancing them to
the championship game against St.
Clements.
Kelsey O'Rourke opened the
scoring for Exeter at the 13.27
mark of the first period. Julie Far-
quhar scored two short handed
goals, and Katie Stewart netted one
near the end of the period to give
1,
Exeter a 5-4 lead. St. Clements tied
the game early in the final period,
but Exeter answered with two more
goals by Farquhar, one on a power
play making it 7-5. '
Again St. Clements fought back
scoring this go ahead goal with 1:51
remaining in the game to make the
score 7-8. After coach Kevin Baer
called a time out, Sarah Hessel
scored to tic the game at 8-8. Goal -
tender Drummond made three great
saves in the dying seconds to send.
the game into overtime.
Exeter controlled the play right
from the opening free pass, with
Katie Stewart scoring the winning
goal in just 26 seconds.
The Exeter Novice White team
