Indoor soccer
league ends season
with playoff tourney
Exeter sported two teams, the
Centennials and the Fury, in the
six -team league this season
Chris Skalkos T -A staff
HURON PARK - The Exeter
Centennials finished off their in-
door soccer season with an,average
record, but all of them will be in
better than average shape when.
they start outdoor soccer this sum-
mer.
The South Huron Indoor
Soccer League wrapped
up its season with a
playoff tournament at
the Centralia Rec-
reation Centre in Huron
Park on Saturday. Exeter
boasted two teams in the
league, the Exeter Cen-
tennials, which .finished the
season in third place with a 6-
6-0 record, and the Exeter Fury
which finished fifth with a 2-8-2
record. •
In playoff action Saturday the
Fury were defeated by London Sla-
via 8-2 and beat St. Columban by
default in pool "A" play. The Cen-
tennials lost 3-1 to Stratford Unit-
ed and 6-3 to the Stratford Tusken
Raiders in the "B" pool.
"We played well ,hut they [the
other team] played a little better
than we did," said Centennial
player Pat Donnelly.
Despite the mediocre season,
Brad Lightfoot said each player
benefited from playing over the
winter because they will be in bet-
ter shape for the upcoming outdoor
soccer season,
"it's kept us in touch with our
game and helped keep us condi-
tioned," said Lightfoot. "We had
the chance to play together as a
team over the winter and that will
carry over to outdoor soccer."
That may have also been a factor
in the Centennials winning the
\Masters Tournament on Feb. 17.
They beat Port Elgin, Stratford,
Godcrich and Taxandria to clinch
the oldtimers championship.
After the playoff tourney the
players got together for a cas-
ual dinner where league con-
vener George McEwan handed
out three awards to Slavia, the
league champions, which
recorded the low-
est goals against
average, awarded
to goalie RohKen-
nally. The league's
top scorer, Sasha Stetkovoic
who had 24 goals.
The Centennials had seven
players in the top 30 goal scoring
list led by the high flying Nick Sza-
bo, the Centennial's top point get-
ter. He notched 13 goals this sea-
son.
McEwan said the six team format
was successful for the league's
first official year and he hasn't
ruled out the possibility of adding
more teams next year. He said the
opportunity to play soccer over the
winter has helped theta to keep in
tune with their hall control skills.
Both the Centennials and the
Fury are gearing up for the summer
soccer action which begins in May.
Aaron Weston, playing for the Exeter Centennials controls
the ball during an indoor soccer playoff tournament in Hu-
ron Park on Saturday.
