Team fighting tournament attracts 18 karate. schools EXETER - Over 100 competitors participated in a karate team light- ing challenge held at the South Hu- ron Recreation Centre on Sunday. Dubbed "Rumble 96,' Bell and Loucks karate school front Lucan hosted the event which pitted 18 different clubs in a point sparring format. • Karate students in live different age categories sparred individually using basic punches and kicks making light contact to the body to score points. Teams of three took • their turns in the ring with each competitor trying. to score three points 'in two minutes. Points were accumulated by' each team. to de- termine winners. Team members shouting from ringside joined spectators in cheer- ing on the fighters giving the tour- nament a highly• charged at- mosphere. Dan Bell, tournament co- ordinator, said he was surprised at the large turnout adding that many local clubs participated, as well as a number of schools from outside the arca such as Goro Karate school from Cambridge which brought eight teams with them. Bell credits the local merchants in Exeter for donating the prizes and the upique format of the tour- nament for attracting a large num- ber of Karate students. With so many different schools par- ticipating, the event was a show- case for a variety of different mar- tial arts styles. "They [competitors! had the Jack Vallquette playing for the NHL Oldtimers moves, the puck up the lc* during'an exhibition game in Henaall Sat- urday night. The former NHL pros took on the Hensall Old- timers in a special event organized by the Hensall Parks Board for Hay Days Sesquicentennial Celebtions. Hock- ey legends' such as Andy Bathgate, Bill Hard nd the no- torious Eddrd _'clear the track' Shack entertain d over 500 people with their aging hockey skills and on ice antics; chance to spar against somebody they have never seen before...it's a learning experience for them," said Bell emphasizing the basics of skill, discipline and respect must be adhered to. Teams were not segregated ac- cording to belt categories allowing less experienced students to chal- lenge fighters in a higher level. "Competitors had to score points meeting the standards of their kelt level so it's possible •for a lower belt to beat a higher belt," added Bell. Non-perishable food items col- lected at the door as admission to the event was donated to the Exeter Food Bank.
