Pairs Skaters take
off in first year
Young, but determined figure
skaters, lift themselves to the top

EXETER - Figure skating is a
sport requiring both technical skill
and artistry. Most skaters will
agree, mastering these two ele-
ments is difficult on one's own.
Mastering these skills with a part-
ner is even more challenging.
But, for Jenalyn Balker, 11, and
esse Sturdy, 13, it's a challenge
prey are willing to take.
r Baker and Sturdy are the Exeter
Figure Skating Club's only com-
petitive pair skaters. The two
have only been skating to-
gether for one year and they

John Bauman suggested •
they give it a try at the
beginning of the sea-
son. Considering Stur-
dy was the only boy
in the club, Bauman
didn't want him to
feel isolated and
thought he might feel
more comfortable with a
partner.
"They are a pretty good
match for their size and pet-
sonality. They've done
really well; said Bauman
adding he will work on
igcreasing the pair's dif-
ficulty level next season.
Sturdy said he never thought'be'
would be skating in pairs when he
first took' up figure skating two
years Ago but he feels it was a
good move.
pairs skating was a good idea. Af-
ter skating solo for three years she
feels learning to skate with a part-
ner has taken her skating to a high-
er level.
"I don't get as nervous when
there's someone there beside me,"
said Baker.
They both agree timing
and communication are '
the two most im-
portant elements
when skating in
pairs. Both must ex-
ecute their moves in
perfect tinting or else
they won't be in unison

NHL Oldtimers will play in Hensall Saturday
IIENSALL - The finishing touch-
es are being planned for Hensall
Arena's biggest event of the yrar -
the NHL Oldtimers Game.
The former NHL pros roll into
the village on Saturday, March 23
Oldtimers from Hensall, Hay and
Zurich will be testing their talents
against the likes of Mike Pelyk (To-
ronto Maple Leafs), Bob Lorimer
(New York Islanders), Dick Red-
mond (Chicago), Andy Bathgate
(New York Rangers), Dean Pren-
tice (Boston/Detroit), and many
more.
The Hensall Parks Board took on
the project as a special event of the
Hay Days Sesquicentennial Cele-
brations. Work began last summer,
with the Hay Days Committee
making initial contact with the
NHL's booking agent. Since then, a
lot of ground has been covered in
planning the event.
The Board was eager tbtake the
opportunity to showcase- the Vil-
lage of Hensall, as well as the talent
of local hockey players. Initial reac-
tion to the event has been quite pos-
itive, both with business sponsor-
ship and with advance ticket sales.
The talent to be featured the eve-
ning of March 23, is not limited to

there is a sudden
change in the middle
of a routine.
"In freeskate you can
change your solo at the
last minute but you can't
with a partner. If you feel
you can't do a jump you
have to let your partner
know because you both
have to do the same. thing,"
Sturdy said.
Sturdy, has no• trouble
lifting Baker up above'
the ice and they . feel
their high, and con-
fident lifts is what '
earned them sec-
ond place in the !
Mooretown competi-
tion. Death spirals and
throw ' axles are the two
most difficult pieces they
incorporate in their you -
nes as both can be po-
tentially dangerous if not
executed properly. How-
ever; Sturdy admits he has
the easy part.
"AII. I have to do is pick
her up and throw her. She
[Baker] is the one that has to do
the axle," he said. "It's harder for
her techtucally,. but it's hard on me
Mentally because if something
goes wrong I feel it's my fault." •
• But nothing has gone wrong and
their perfor autce tin the ice is
pressive. With the first and most.
difficult year behind them Baker
and Sturdy plan on skating together
*at 'season to build on what they
have learned so far.
'We're both getting better every
intoe we're.on the Ice," they said.
"I started figure skating lessons
Jest to improve my hockey," said
Sturdy who credits his figure skat-
ing for making him a bettor ice
hockey skater. Sturdy still plays
hockey at the Peewee level In

skating] but I think I can go further
with figure skating," he added.
