Fresh halibut from Alaska
featured at Devon location
'The man who delivers" started as a one-man operation in the fuel busi-
ness in 1983 and has expanded in faint and home heating fuel to two tan-
dem trucks and three gas bars, one which includes a restaurant.
He continues to deliver more products and services to residents of South
Huron and North Middlesex.
Bev Bumstead of Lucan began in the fuel business as an employee of
Pat Clarke in Lucan in 11.18 and five years later started out on his. own
with one single axle truck.
Now operating as Bumstead Fuels, he has outlets at Devon, Lucan and
Grand Bend. Featured at the Devon location at the comer of Highway 4
and Huron county road 4 is an Alaskan Handcut Fish and Chips restaurant.
At Grand Bend manager Sheila Tiedeman is in charge of Mother's Pan-
try which features in addition to convenience items, movies and lottery
tickets, a Chicken Express with Chester Fried Chicken.
Mother's Pantry is located on the east side of Highway 21, a short dis-
tance south of the main comer in Grand Bend.
Beginning on April 1 of this year, Chester Chicken will be on the menu
at the Devon corner restaurant. The Grand Bend Chicken Express is the
second Chester Chicken franchise in Ontario.
Bumstead says, "Chester Chicken has 80 franchise outlets in Quebec
and a large number in the United States and Westem Canada. The prepara-
tion process of the chicken is very important as it produces a crispier and
more moisturized product."
Dave and John Cook are agents and drivers for Bumstead Fuels serving
fuels to farmers and home owners and small gas bars in a radius of 50
miles of Lucan.
In November of 1995, the Alaskan Handcut Fish and Chips restaumnt
was established at the Devon location.
• Jeff Desmond is manager of the restaurant and says he serves only hal-
ibut from Alaska. He adds, " It's the best fish we can possibly get. We
bring it in in whole chunks of 60 to 80 pounds from Alaska. It's as fresh as
you can get. The fish are gutted and frozen on the ships as soon as they are
caught."
Desmond continued, " When we get the fish in four inch chunks we
skin, debone and fillet them. We have a secret batter which we use on the
halibut. It is very light and doesn't hold the grease like some batters do.
The right batter makes or breaks your fish. All our french fries are cut by
hand every morning."
Another specialty in the restaurant is an early bird breakfast. A. newly
added item of celery bread is proving very popular.
Restaurant hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Wednesdays and 6
a.m. to 8 p.m. from Thursdays through to Saturdays. Gas bar hours are 6
a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and 8
a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. In Lucan gas bar hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. sev-
en days a week.
Ken McPherson is manager of the Devon gas bar
On the question of why he has added a restaurant to his gas station at
Devon, Bumstead said, " Gas bars can't stand alone because of a low profit
margin. Rather than pull out we decided to add other services of quality."
Bumstead went on to say that a two -bay do-it-yourself car wash will be
opened at the Devon location in the very near future.
Currently gas, chicken, variety and convenience items, movies and lot-
tery tickets are available at Mother's Pantry al Grand Bend and very short-
ly it will be gas, fish, chicken and a carr wash at Devon.
