Game times were not available at press time..' • Exeter bounced back from a 1-0 loss Saturday night in Exeter to de•. feat the defending champions 3-2. In fact, all three games on the weekend were won by a margin of one goal, showing how closely the two teams were matched. The se- ries, which was based on points, ended 7-5 in Exeter's favor. Trevor Taylor started the scoring for the Chiefs Sunday when he flipped in a pass from Rob' Ko- bayashi. Defenseman Brian Rich- ardson also picked up an assist on the play. The game was developing in to another goaltenders' duel until midway in the second period when Ben Geiger took advantage of the Aylmer goalie's lapse in concentra- tion. Geiger outraced him for the puck to give Exeter a 2-0 lead. Aylmer brought the score to with- in one when they got their first goal with 4:10 remaining in the sec- ond period. It was their turn to cap- italize on an Exeter clearing mis- take as they tied the game with 7:10 remaining. It didn't take Exeter long to re- gain the lead as Marty Debruyn filed a seeing ala shot from the blue line.. From thfS point the Chiefs switched to u defensive mode to clinch the victory although they needed a couple of big saves from Dennis Roth. Saturday The Chiefs missed an op- portunity to eliminate Aylmer Sat- urday at the South Huron Rec Cen- tre. Although they only needed a tie to clinch the series they were stonewalled time and time again by a solid Aylmer goaltender. Aylmer clung to a 1-0 lead throughout most of the game 'al- though Exeter came close on three solid scoring opportunities. Friday Perhaps the most exciting game of the series was Friday's match in Aylmer as the Chiefs bounced back from a one goal deficit to defeat Aylmer 2-1 in overtime. Aylmer was clinging to a 1-0 lead after scoring mid -way through the first period. Speedy forward Gavin Snell proved that hard work pays when he managed to tie the score at one in the second period. Exeter Red are champions FOREST.- The Exeter Red ringette team won the Huron Perth cham- pionship Saturday in Forest with an outstanding team effort. At the end of the second period, the score was tied 8-8. After a pep talk, the Exeter squad scored the winning overtime goal with 48 seconds left on the clock. Danielle Ritchie played great in net with help from Amber Preszcator, Holly Hem, Aimee McCann and Jackie Marshall on defense. Goals were scored by McCann (3), Preszcator (4), Jennifer Timmer - mans and Brittney Schroeder. Assists were recorded by Hem, Kristen Reschke, Michelle Gaiser, Rita Kemp, Marshall, McCann and Lea Mudge. "The girls played the best game I've ever seen them play," said coach Julie Ritchie. Petite `C' are the finalists FOREST - On Saturday, the Exeter Optimist Petite 'C' team lost in overtime 3-2 to Seaforth in the Huron-Petth finals. Goaltender Miranda Grenier played another solid game in net for the locals making 27 saves. Cheryl Montgomery scored Exeter's first goal midway through the first period with Jennifer Alderdice and Shannon Postill assisting. Late in the second half, Jenna Revington scored the tieing goal with Jocelyn Stite assisting. Seaforth was successful in the sudden victory overtime scoring one minute into the extra period. "I knew this was going to be a close game before it even started," said coach Michele Hodgen adding the shots on net were almost even. 1 bruyn and Steve. Cook picked lip assists. Both goalies were outstanding as they managed to hold the score at one until the end of regulation time. The Chiefs didn't waste any time as 30 seconds into overtime •Derek Beckett slid a pass across the goal - mouth to Mark Glavin who scored the winner. Coach Henri Debruye said it felt good to dethrone the ; defending provincial champions!** "Everybody stepped Up_. their play...they really wanted to beat this team," he said. Every game was a hard fought battle between these two team who quickly developed a strong rivalry, but Debruyn said the turning point came in game four when they beat Aylmer on their own ice in over- time. "It was a monkey on our back trying to win in Aylmer," he said. The thrilling overtime victory lifted the players emotions and tipped the scale in their favor in the six point series. The Chiefs will meet Listowel in the semi-finals on Friday at 9 p.m. The action returns to Exeter Sat urday for an 8 p.m. game with the third game location being decided by a coin toss for home ice.
