Dear Editor: The Moms Tract, a 144 acre forest, on the banks of the Maitland River, is one of Huron County's most exquisite, most pristine and most beautiful fo- rests. The Morris Tract is home to many rare and endan- gered birds and plants. With an established trail sys- tem, this forest has been enjoyed by many hikers, naturalists and snowmobilers for decades. The future integrity of this magnificent forest now depends on us. The Nature Conservancy of Canada, supported by The Friends of the Morris Tract, negotiated to buy this special forest from the County of Huron, in or- der to protect it in perpetuity, as a natural, ever evolving forest. The Nature Conservancy and Friends of the Mor- ris Tract have to raise $285,000.00 by the end of February - the closing date of the sale. This sounds like a lot of money, but we are off to a great start! An anonymous benefactor has already pledged $100,000 to match private sector donations . Thanks to this generous contribution, every dollar donated brings us $2.00 closer to our goal. It is very likely that this will be our only chance to protect this unique natural treasure from the logger's saw. A natural treasure which reminds me of Henry Thoreau and his life at Walden: "We can never have enough nature. We must be refreshed by the sight of inexhaustible vigor. The wilderness with its living and its decaying trees, the thundercloud, and the rain which lasts three weeks and produces freshets. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some of life pasturing freely, where we never wan- der." Please help us to save the Morris Tract and give a present to the future.
