Madill Dave Farquhar was unstoppable when he decided to break for the net during a South Huron junior basketball game Friday, scoring a total of 14 points. EXETER - The South Huron Dis- trict High School senior basketball team were eliminated from playoff contention Friday losing 48-39 in a semi-final game against F.E. Ma- dill. The seniors played well with Marty Debruyn leading the way in scoring with 18 points followed by Jason Maskell who contributed nine points. Finishing the season with a suc- cessful 6-2 record, the Panthers were in a three-way tie for first place along with Goderich and Ma- dill, however, a fatal coin toss put them in third place heading into the playoffs. The nine point loss to Madill fol- lowed a 56-41 loss to them during their last regular season game. Junior basketball The junior team was more suc- cessful against Madill defeating them 55-41 in front of a well at- tended home crowd. The Panthers started strong, end- ing the first quarter with a 13-4 lead. Madill tumed up the heat in the second frame putting on a strong shooting game, but south Huron held on to keep a 29-18 lead going into the second half. Their lead was never threatened as the Panthers relied on a strong defensive game keeping the fouls down. Darryl Romphf netted 20 points jumping for South Huron and Dave Farquhar put on a lay-up clinic go- ing up in the air for a total of 14 points. The midget girls also lost to Goderich but managed to split their matches with Clinton. By the third set they managed to pull to- gether and win two out of three games against St. Anne's. South Huron hockey The South Huron Hockey team travelled to St. Mary's Thursday where they played a hard fought game before losing 6-4. The Panthers got behind early al- lowing St. Marys a three goal lead in the first period but South Huron turned it on in the second notching two goals from Janet Jeffrey and Blair Moir. Jeffrey scored again in the third as did Brad Brown but it was too little too late for the Panthers who couldn't stop St. Marys from scor- ing four more times. Coach Pete Heeney said the Pan- thers played better against the larg- er and fast skating St Marys team near the "W i , shaky start. We couldfl' nto the game before it was over," said Heeney. The loss rounds out their regular season record to a respectable 4-4. "Overall I'm happy with that," said Heeney adding all four lines have been contributing. They will meet Goderich in a best two out of three playoff round which started on Monday. The re- sults for Monday's game was not known during press time. T Nir Confirm Kennedy, Junior "D" penalty collector taff R - Elbowing, hooking, cChris harB groughi g, fighting are only a few of the many penalties a hockey player can be called for, and Chris Kennedy of the Exeter Junior "D" Hawks has served time for all of them at one point or another. At the end of the regular season on Saturday, Kennedy has clocked a total of 157 penalty minutes, the highest on his team and the most re- corded for any player in the Yeck Conference of the Junior "D" League. But don't be quick to label him as a ruffian or a goon. This 21 year- old hockey player can also score goals. With 17 goals and 20 assists in 30 games, Kennedy is one of the top five point getters for the Hawks who have had the honor of completing their regular season in first place with a 30-4-4 record. "I'm a rough hockey player so I prefer to hit people but if I get the chance to score I usually do," said Kennedy, who credits his physical style of play and his aggressive nature for the 37 points he has ac- cumulated through the season. A native of Clinton, Kennedy played Junior "C" hockey for Wing - ham where he was also leading the team in penalty minutes before signing with Exeter. Among the many two minute minor, five minute major or 10 minute misconduct penalties he collects, fighting seems to be his favorite and he estimates he's dropped the gloves more than a dozen times over the season. "Some people have to be tuned in once in a while," said Kennedy explaining his philosophy on fighting. "It gets the team going and I get pumped up." Discipline is not one of his strong points and this 193 lb. hockey player is quick to say he would go toe -to -to with anyone in the league. It's not that Kennedy can't back down from a chal- lenge. He has been keeping his cool for the last few games remaining in the Hawk's schedule, and he has been surprising a lot of people by keeping his dukes down. "I haven't been in a fight for a while. I've been try- ing to stick with hockey," he said. "But I'd better do something about that this weekend." Kennedy admits his teammates get upset with him sometimes when he takes a stupid penalty but for the most part, they accept him for what he is. An aggressive with a scoring touch. This may prove to be an asset to the Hawks Friday as they prepare to face the North Middlesex Stars in the first round of the playoffs. North Middlesex has constantly been a thorn in their side handing the Hawks their first Toss of the season and tieing them on two other occasions. In previous encounters the Hawks have been out - muscled by the large and physical team from Parkhill and unleashing Kennedy may be the "fight fire with fire" strategy they need to defeat them in the playoffs. Kennedy has one more year with the Hawks and he doesn't plan on trying to change his reputation or his his style. According to Kennedy, most of the calls he gets are "cheesy" and he insists the referee's right arm is more prone to point straight up when he's on the ice because he's well known among referee cir- cles, "It's just the way I play, no matter what I do I al- ways get a penalty," said Kennedy.
