Times-Advocate, 1996-02-21, Page 10ZURICH - Wayne Cook, owner of the Parke' and Parker Farm Drainage
operation, located two miles north of Zurich has 25 years of experience in
the tile drainage business.
At the age of 18 he started out as an employee of Cook Brothers' Drain-
age operated by his father and uncle,
In 1976, Wayne and his wife Barh,Swved to Western Canada and oper-
ated Western Drainage which was a subsidiary of Big 0 Tile Company of
Hensall.
After 12 years in the west, the Cooks' moved back to Ontario and in
1987 purchased their present business from Ken and George Parker.
Parker and Parker Drainage has the latest in farm drainage equipment.
In late 1995, they purchased a custom designed dozer plow which can
handle all drainage jobs including installation of road drainage and any
jobs for utilities and are prepared to expand to further fields.
Asked about the advantages of tile drainage , Cook says, "It increases
crop production with higher quality and quantity of yields due to an earlier
planting season and subsequently an earlier harvest."
He continued, "It also produces less soil compaction and a big reduction
in soil erosion.
The Parker and Parker business and all of their equipment is licensed by
the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and Rural Affairs. These li-
cences allow farmers to participate in Ontario's farm drainage loan pro-
gram
Wayne Cook is the 1996 president of the Land Improvement Contrac-
tors of Ontario. This organization was established in 1958 as the Ontario
Farm Drainage Association. The name of the group was changed in 1995,
Cook says, "The objectives of the LICO are to encourage and promote
the use of tile drainage and soil and water conservation and to support the
mutual interest and welfare of the agriculture and drainage industries in
Ontario."
As well as providing the people of Ontario with food and fibre at a rea-
sonable cost, land drainage is an important element of a successful farm
management program which includes timely field operations and soil con-
servation.
Drainage is an investment that nitist produce sufficient increased returns
within a reasonable period of time. file longer the period of satisfactory
operation, the greater returns. To Oiure that a drainage system will func-
tion efficiently for a long period of time, good soil management practices
are essential. These include returning crop residue to the soil and may in-
clude the growing of deep-rooted legumes in a rotation.
Farming has changed. The wet fields were the last to be worked in the
old system with small fields. Today, with large fields this option is no
longer viable. It is important that the drainage of the large fields be uni-
form for ease for working and uniformity of crop ripeness at harvest time.
For small grains, experience indicates that the seeding date can be ad-
vanced about two weeks on drained land compared with surface -drained
land. The surface of waterlogged soil tends to heave when frozen; plants
are Lifted and their roots are broken( Fall wheat is very susceptible to frost
heaving. Draining water, from the.) ager soil, pores redlic!s, the an}cpdG

P & yields improved quality when
grown on well -drained land.,Good drainage is also needed when the cmp
is harvested. Crops such as iotatoes` have a high oxygen demand and will
rot after being waterlogged for 24 hours. Many fruit crops react similarly.
Crop roots which use nodules to obtain their nitrogen supply are suscep-
tible to temporary waterlogging. Ttrooted crops are less able to contend
with poor drainage than crops with ateral root systems.
Crop quality as reflected in weight per bushel, is much higher from
drained land. Failure to harvest on time means continued exposure to
weather and rapid loss in quality. '
Drainage is one of the most important and profitable practices of conser-
vation farming. Drainage also play a major role in improving the water
quality from agricultural land.
A drained soil has enough empty soil pore volume to store one inch of
water per foot of soil depth. Water infiltrates into the soil instead of run-
ning off over the surface. Erosion from a sandy loam soil can be reduced
by a factor of 10 with subsurface drainage.
Subsurface drainage also reduces flood peaks by 15 percent. The number
of storms that produce runoff is also reduced by one-half. Improved sur-
face drainage and open ditches without the addition of subsurface drain-
age tends to increase or change the pattern of stream flow.
Wayne Cook is building the Parker and Parker drainage business on
quality job installation based on his, many years of experience and custom-
er service.
If you are considering draining your land, installing septic systems or
performing any number of jobs requiring heavy equipment give the friend-
