RICHMOND HILL - Sometimes
coming close is enough.
The Exeter Optimist petite "C"
Ringette team came as close as they
have ever come to defeating their
arch rivals, the London Yellow dur-
ing a tournament in Richmond Hill
on Saturday.
Leading 3-2 in the last period of
play, it seemed as if Exeter was
about to beat London. A feat never
accomplished before.
However, with only three sec-
onds left on the clock London
scored the tieing goal ending the
game in a 3-3 draw.
"We've never beaten London be-
fore, we have never even come this
close," said coach Michel Hodgert,
realizing they were a mere three
seconds away from victory. "It
was surprising we played as well as
we did, especially that early in the
morning," she said adding the game
started at 7 a.m.
Jamie Darling scored two goals
for Exeter and Megan Skinner add-
ed the third. They were assisted by
Cheryl Montgomery, Amy Taylor,
Shannon Postill and Jennifer Al-
derdice.
Exeter also faced two more teams
on the same day blanking home
team Richmond Hill 5-0 before los-
ing to Markham 5-0.

Driving Range last Saturday.
The tournament has always been
one of the most popular outdoor
events of the carnival with teams
travelling as far away as Sarnia to
play.
This year the tourney raised $170
for the Winter Carnival.
In the final game dubbed "snow -
bowl," Gables quarterback Jerry
Lamport threw Touchdown passes
to Tom McConnell, Paul Smith
and tournament MVP Kevin flu-
chacher in the championship.
Mark Penhale and Rob Howie
made outstanding contributions on
defence to preserve the win.
The -23 degrees celsius weather
provided for some difficult play-
ing, however it was a vast improve-
ment to the blizzard conditions
many of the final games were
played in last year.

their only victory of the tourna-

"She stopped some real hard
shots. That was the best I've seen
her play," said Hodgert.
Montgomery, Taylor, Skinner,
Jenna Revington and Jocelyn Stire
scored goals while Postill, Al-
derdice, Mary Gregus, Kristin Re-
gier and Erin Campbell picked up
assists.
By the end of the day, Exeter
wasn't firing on all cylinders head-
ing into the third and final game.
They were also no match for the
much larger and stronger skating
team from Markham."
They didn't have the energy they
had for the first two games," said
Hodgert.
Overall, she said their 1-1-1
record may seem disappointing,
however, the Petites went 50 per
cent in the goal scoring de-
partment, scoring an equal amount
of goals that were scored on them
by the high calibre teams they
faced.
But most importantly, they sent
London home licking their wounds
proving they are a team to be reck-
oned with.
"We knew we were up against
some tough competition, but I
thought we had a fabulous week-
end," said Hodgert. "This is the
best tournament I can remember."
"We're just a bunch of hackers
just out to have some fun. But we i
have gained a reputation for win-
ning and some of these teams real-
ly want to beat us bad," said Lam-
port.
This year's Winter Carnival Cup
marks their 8th tournament cham-
pionship in the past three years.

South Huron
hockey team
sees action

EXETER - After a three week
absence, the South Huron District
High School hockey team was back
in action last Tuesday afternoon
losing 3-1 to a fast skating St. Mar-
ys team at the South Huron Rec-
reation Centre.
They also travelled to Goderich
on Monday winning 3-2 with all of
their goals coming off the pow-
erplay.
The Panthers gave up one goal to
St. Marys early in the game playing
a flat footed penalty free first pe-
riod.
"They weren't clicking as a team.
They haven't played together in
three weeks," said Panther coach
Pete Heeney.
The Panthers tied the game at one
with 10 seconds remaining in the
second. Jarrett Jeffrey went in all
alone on a breakaway and was
stopped by the St. Marys netmind-
er. The save produced a rebound
for Ryan Beckett who was trailing
on the play. He made no mistake,
popping it in past the goalie.
Heeney credited Jeffrey's 'lard
work for the Panther's lone goal in
the game.
"We outshot St. Marys 20-6 in
the second period. Their goalie
really held them in the game," he
said.
South Huron played chippy and
frustrated in the third period al-
lowing St. Marys to add two more
goals to capture the victory.
Panthers beat Goderich
The Panthers fell behind 1-0 to
' Goderich half -way through the
first period on Monday afternoon.
Out of a total 79 minutes in pen-
alties distributed in the game the
Panther's received 20 in period
number two.
South Huron battled back
throughout the rowdy second with
two powerplay goals by Ryan
Freiter and Adam Jean. Tim Mor-
gan and Rob Kobayashi set up
Freiter for the Panther's first goal.
Jarrett Jeffrey and Blair Moir re-
corded assists on Jean's goal.
Things seemed to calm down in
the third as Goderich scored a
powerplay goal less than a minute
into the period to tie the garne at
two.
South Huron rapped the game up
with their third and final pow-
erplay goal. Brian Denomme as-
sisted on Bryon Ellerington' game
winning goal with less than five
minutes remaining in regulation.
The Panthers are preparing for a
rescheduled game on Thursday
against Wingham.
Kids and golden agars compete at Provincials

ZURICH - Bowling veterans Ron Dann and Jim
Bedard belong to the Golden Agers club.
Corey Ducharme, 8, and Shawn O'Brien, 10, are
bowling in the bantam division of Y.B.C.
Together, these four bowlers will team up to com-
pete in the Dairy Queen Kid* and Golden Agers
Tournament in Brampton on Sapday.
This unique tournament is .Oh annual event that
combines the bowling experience of golden age
bowlers, 55 and over, with the youth of bantam age
• bowlers, six to 10.
Bowling out of Zurich Town and Country Lanes,
the four were matched up after they scored the
highest pins over average during house level roll -
offs. They earned a berth in the Provincials after
qualifying at the zone roll -offs in Wallaceburg.
Winners will advance to the Nationals at Sudbury
in April.
This will be Darn's second time in the Kids and
Golden agers tournament. He competed with a
team of Town and Country Bowler wo years ago
and ended up tied for first place at the Zone level in
Wallaceburg. However• they narrowly lost the tie -
breaking game misaiug the opportunity to play in
the Provinciala.
"When we lost that playoff pme I somehow felt
we had let the kids down and 1 hoped we would get
another chance at it," said Dann.
He got that chance and found redemption leading
the team to a victory at Wallaceburg.
"I was determined I was going to get another
crack at it again," he added.
Winning the zone tournament was a rare ex-
perience for O'Brien, 10, who k playing com-
petitively for the first time, and Ducharme, 8, who
has just recently learned how to bowl with one
hand.
"We showed those kids something in Wal-
laceburg they have never seen before. We showed
them emotion," said Dann. "Bowling is like any
other sport, you have to get fired up and if you want
to win you really have to want it," he said adding
the two youngsters have learned how to have fun
while working towards the goal of winning.
Dann won't make any predictions on how they
will do at the provincials but he said he is op-
timistic and feels they may have an advantage over
other teams because Dann is also, the two young-
sters' bowling instructtw and they are used to work-
ing together.
"They listen well and they have excellent con-
centration," said Dann. "We h*Ve a good team this
year...I have a good feeling about this."
No matter how far they go, Dann feels playing at
the Provincial level will be a tremendous ex-
perience for the young bowlers.
"If you don't compete outsidq your own bowling
centre, you'll never know what's out there. Tourna-
ments like these teach kids to strive and do better
and I hope this will have a positive affect on their
lives," Dann said.
Dann admits they won't take any complicated
strategies with them to the Provincials. Their in-
gredients for winning are simple.
"We are going to do our beat to bowl well over
our averages and if it happens to be our day fine. if
it isn't, well, we made it to the Ontario Champion-
ships. How many kids have the opportunity to do
