Valentine's Day
fact
Overall, the custom of
choosing valentines on
this day is of
considerable antiquity,
and it was an old belief
that birds began to ma
on this day. On the ev
of Saint Valentine's da
young people of both
sexes used to meet,
and each of them drew
one by lot from a
number of names of the
opposite sex, which
were put into a common
receptacle. Each
gentleman thus got a
lady for his valentine,
and became the
valentine of a lady.

Huron Board of Education
considers double- bussing
Double bus runs could be
one of the few remaining
ways to reduce savings
cause the board has been reducing costs for a long-
er period of time.
Although the possibility of double bus runs has
been investigated in a number of areas including
Wingham and Goderich, due to integrated bus
routes is more difficult to implement in other areas,

Director Kul Carroll responded to a re-
cent letter to the editor in the 'Clinton
New Record suggesting money could be
saved by contacting bus service through
the private sector. Contracted service
costs the board $2.05 per kilometre while
the board pays $1.44 per km to operate

of administration and clerical support.

Double runs mean a bus will

double bussing is implemented.
Although funding cuts have not
been confirmed, it has been sug-
gested transportation costs could be
cut up to 10 per cent. The calcula-
tion the ministry uses to arrive at
funding figures may include the averaging of
portation costs over the last three years. This aver-
aging is an attempt to bring equity to reduced fund-
ing. However, in the case of Huron County, three
years is insufficient to address equity concerns be -

3,100 square feet of space and in-

labor and material costs
LUCAN = Council passed a motion at last Tuesday night's meeting
to increase the installation price of a new water meter from $150 to
$225 in order to cover the costs of labor and material.
"Obviously, we are going to have to cover costs," said Councillor
Rob Brady.
Council directed Administrator Ron Reymer to research village
policy in regard to the homeowner's option of hiring a plumber to
do the installation. Council may examine the issue further to ensure
it will be not held responsible if homeowners choose to have a
plumber complete the work. The village also indicated it would re-
quire an inspection be completed in this case.
