EXETER - The Exeter Midget
representative team has begun their
playoff season and are threatening
to sweep their preliminary rounds.
After finishing their regular sea-
son in the Shamrock Minor Hockey
League with a strong 10-5-5
record, the RSD Generals have
picked up where they left off win-
ning their first four playoff games.
The midgets defeated Dorchester
5-3 last Wednesday and shut out
Lambeth 3-0 last Friday.
Goal scorers . for Exeter were
Dave Farquhar, Gavin Poole and
Ryan Beckett, Bill Kline and Ryan
Freiter. Ryan Soldan, Chad Dal-
rymple, Cam Dougall, Chad Gil-
fillan, Beckett, Kline and Freiter re-
corded assists.
Lambeth, however, put up a bet-
ter fight when Exeter played host at
the South Huron Recreation Centre
Wednesday night in a rough and
emotional game.
"It was a little uglier than we
wanted it to be," said Exeter coach
Dave Dalrymple about the five on
five board bouncing squirmish that
erupted late in the game.
But despite the all-out effort by
the visiting team who mounted a
small comeback, they couldn't get
past Midget goalie Nathan Hern
who kept his team in the game
when Lambeth started to come on
strong in the third period.
"1 think Lambeth came into the
game hungrier for Win than us,
and they almost got it," said Dal-
rymple. "It made the guys think
about what it takes to make it in the
playoffs."
Geoff Maver, Soldan, Beckett
and Gilfillan scored for the mid-
gets assisted by Luke Sims, Brian
Richardson, Dave Farquhar and
Jeff Sararas.
As if the Lambeth game wasn't
close enough, the midgets defeated
Dorchester by the same score on
Sunday. Beckett, Sims and Brian
Ellerington assisted Farquhar and
Freiter who shared a pair of goals
in the 4-3 win over Dorchester.
The midgets are more than half-
way through a preliminary round
robin playoff format with Dor-
chester, Lambeth and Forest play-
ing each team twice.
The first place team will be
matched up against the fourth
place team, the second with the
third and the winners will advance
to the quarter finals.
Dalrymple said goaltending has
been a strong element for the team
throughout the regular season and
has become even more vital in the
playoffs.
The midgets offensive weapons
are also coming through for them.
Dave Farquhar, who finished the
regular season with a team leading
23 goals is still introducing the
puck to the back of the net scoring
six goals in four garnes.
"He's starting to show his colors
now," said Dalrymple.
Likewise, Ryan Freiter, the set-
up man who notched 11 assists in
the regular season, has begun to
shine.
"He's a good team player and
he's really fired it up for the
playoffs," he added.

EXETER - After coming off an incredible 19-2-2 regular season
the Bantam Legionnaires have won two games and tied the other in
their first round of the playoffs.
In their first play-off game at home on Jan. 24 the Legionnaires
came out strong defeating Strathroy 4-0 with stellar a performance
in goal by B.J. Theophilopoulos.
"We're alternating goaltenders in the first round giving guys com-
plete games. We need one of them to step forward," said coach Ter-
ry Bourne.
Scott Gilfillan and Cam Dougall Scored lone goals for the Exeter
while first year bantam Jeff Campbell notched two for the victory.
Greg Geoffrey, Ty Bourne, Dave Marshall, Scott Keys, and Greg
Young recorded assists for the Legionnaires.
The bantams second game in Lambeth Jan. 26 was a different sto-
ry with the team dominating in the first half. They fell apart late in
the game allowing Lambeth to tie it up atsix.
With the Legionpaires,uV;Aythey lookecd,,i(ce tbey,vjero.going to
walk away with the victory. However, team defense broke down in
the third allowing Lambeth to score four goals.
Goal scorers for the Legionnaires were Marshall with two, Young,
Bourne, Campbell and Geoffrey added the others.
Geoffrey and Campbell notched two assists each while Bourne,
Dougall, Young, Keys and Brian Parsons also recorded assists in
the 6-6 tie.
"To succeed in the play-offs we're going to have to work on team
discipline and our team defense," said coach Brian Hodgins.
The Legionnaires third play-off game was played on Jan. 31 in
Exeter against Lambeth with the bantams regaining their confidence
winning 4-3, completing the home and home match -up for the first
round of the playoffs against Lambeth.
Terry Bourne found the game difficult at tiines with plenty of
pressure put forward by the Lambeth squad.
"The team that gets goaltending and works the hardest will prob-
ably be the winning team when it's all said and done," he said.
With six points in three games Jeff Campbell is one of the Le-
gionnaires leading goal scorers. He was backed up by teammates
Scott Keys who scored two goals and Matt Szabo added one in the
Lambeth game.
Chad Montieth and Kian MacDougall were credited with assists.
Bourne credits Campbell with leading the team offensively.
"He's been a leader all year for us, now we need some of the other
guys to step up," he said.
Defensively, Bourne said that Cam Dougall has been a leader, and
that there're counting on him to be there." ,
He's also played midget this season, playing in two games to-
night. We are hoping that it doesn't take it's toll on him," he said.

MITCHELL - The Exeter Ladies Auxiliary Pewee hockey team
travelled to Mitchell this past week -end to take part in the 40th an-
nual Mitchell Pewee hockey tournament. The Pewees captured the
tournament winning all three games.
The Pewees defeated Durham 1-0 in their first game of the tourna-
ment on Saturday. Andrew Maver scored the lone goal for the Pe-
wees unassisted two minutes into the game.
The Pewees goaltender Ryan Sullivan played an excellent game
recording the shutout. He was named Player Of The Game by Tour-
nament Officials.
Later that day Exeter faced off against Thorold, defeating them 4-
1. The win placed the Pewees into the championship game.
Steve Rasenberg scored two goals for the Pewees while Josh Mav-
er and Aaron Heywood added one each.
Andrew Maver notched two assists, Matt Rowe, Jeff Hogan, Barry
Parsons, and Ryan Groot each tallied for one as well. .
Steve Rasenberg was named player of the game by Tournament
Officials for his contribution of two goals in the Thorold defeat.
In the Championship game Exeter squared off against tournament
hosts Mitchell.
Exeter was down 2-1 at the start of the third period but Steve Ra-
senberg's goal 30 seconds into the frame tied the game at two. An-
drew Maver and Matt Rowe assisted.
With one minute remaining in regulation time, Josh Maver scored
his second goal of the game clinching the Championship for the Pe-
wees. He was assisted by Craig Overholt and Aaron Heywood.
The game winning goal also gave Maver the Player Of The Game
Award. Of the 16 netminders in the tournament Exeters Ryan Sul-
livan was named the M.V.P. goalie.
Exeter coach Bob McDonald said the Pewees are not a high scor-
ing team and credited Sullivan for keeping them in the tournament.
"He's the backbone of our team he holds us in the games, keeping
the goals out," he said.
MacDonald said that the tournament was a good experience for
the team going into the playoffs.
"At the start of the year the kids didn't know how to play with in-
tensity but now they're starting to come together as a team. I think
it's going to show in the playoffs," he said.
