HENSALL - Photographer Dan-
iel Holm of Hensall was honored
recently by being chosen as the of-
ficial photographer of Winter
Dreams on Ice, Lloyd Eisler's and
Isabelle Brasseur's celebrity skat-
ing benefit held in London January
20.
"It was a thrill," said Holm.
"I've been watching these skaters
on television for years, at the
Olympics and World Champion-
ships... It was a real privilege not
only to photograph them perform-
ing, but to have full backstage ac-
cess to photograph them in candid
moments."
Holm was hired by The Bayley
Group of London, the conference/
event management company re-
sponsible for bringing Winter
Dreams on Ice to London as a
kick-off to Winterfest '96, which
the company also organized.
"I've done photography assign-
ments for The Bayley group i►e
past, in particut5r= the -CateliNen

gala opening of the Canadian Med-
ical Hall of Fame," said Holm.
"When Cass Bayley asked me if
I'd be interested in covering this
event, of course I jumped at the
chance. There was no question
about it!"
Two sold -out performances were
held at London's Thompson Arena
on January 20. Proceeds from the
shows benefit the Children's Wish
Foundation of Canada, the skaters'
favorite charity.
Besides Eisler and Brasseur, the
photographer captured Brian Orser,
Sebastien Britten, Barb Underhill
and Paul Martini, Jennifer Robin-
son and other world-class skaters
in public and private moments be-
hind -the -scenes.
"It's incredible to witness the de-
mands continually made on them
by the public - for autographs, pic-
tures and so on - yet time and
again, I saw each of the skaters
demonstrate patience and small
acts of generosity: to their fans, to
each other and to me as a media
representative. There were no egos
to deal with."
Technically, the performances
were very difficult to photograph.
"As you'd expect, the skaters are
moving very fast: even with the
powerful spotlights and high-speed
(800 ASA) film, I still had to shoot
with lenses wide open, giving very
shallow depth of focus and very lit-
tle margin for er 9t.; I'M glad

the challenge of capturing fleeting
moments. That experience has also
given me an edge in wedding pho-
tography.

EXETER- Clerk -Treasurer Liz
Bell reported to council the wel-
comed news the town concluded
the 1995 fiscal year with an-
other surplus, making the total
accumulating net surplus
$122,000.
Several projects came in under
budget; "windfall" cheques ar-
rived and all departments came
in at or under budget; and user
fees off -set much of the costs.
The Cemetery Board also re-
ported a $20,000 surplus, pri-
marily as a result of a very high
number of internments: 99 in
1995 compared to the usual of
about 70.
In passing on the positive fi-

of this assignment, and so are The
